Actors and Actresses Who Left Uzalo
Since its premiere, Uzalo has seen a lot of actors in its cast list come and go and new cast members introduced with each season. Different actors have left the show for various reasons ranging from better opportunities elsewhere to those fired for unruly behavior.
Like Baby Cele, Siyabonga Shibe, who played Qhabanga, another leading actor, left Uzalo after the 6th season. It has not been disclosed what prompted the departure, but the show did go on without Siyabonga and has been remarkably successful since then. Before Shibe left, there were rumors that he had fights with the production crew and, as a result, was fired. Still, the actor debunked these rumors and asserted that his departure from the show was voluntary and not a punitive measure for misconduct.
Dawn Thandeka King
King, who played the role of MaNgcobo, and like her counterparts, Baby Cele and Siyabonga Shibe, decided not to renew his contract after the end of the 6th season but instead wanted to pursue other opportunities in Johannesburg.
Ntokozo ‘TK’ Dlamini
Another Uzalo actor who has left the show is Ntokozo Dlamini, also referred to as TK Dlamini. On Uzalo, he plays the character of Mastermind, an old fan favorite. He left the show when his partner Jessica Nkosi made him a dad. When he took too long to return to the show, rumors started going round that he had been fired due to reasons ranging from his being difficult to work with, missing shooting schedules repeatedly, etc. But TK cleared the air on Gagasi FM, where he stated that he would be leaving the show for good to care for his baby.
To give credence to this, Marang Setshwaelo, Uzalo’s PR manager, also went on air to state categorically that the actor was not fired but instead left the show voluntarily, and at the same time, they hoped to see him back. And yes, Mastermind’s character did return to Uzalo in a short role in May 2021. Fans still hope that the ace actor’s character will somehow be written back into the show so he could feature regularly. This has given rise to speculations that Ntokozo is coming back to the show.
On Uzalo, Nelisa Mchunu played the role of Fikile, who had a love story with Sbu. She was a delight to watch throughout her appearance on the TV show until May 2021, when she tweeted that she wouldn’t be seen again. It was later revealed that she left the show after her contract ended.
Nay Maps, who plays the character of Mxolisi, is also another Uzalo actor whose departure from the show had raised a lot of noise. In the April 2021 teaser of the highly watched TV show, it was revealed that the actor would be featured on the show, but the reverse seemed to be the case as he was not seen anywhere. When fans demanded answers as to why the actor had not been seen, Nomfundo Zondi (Uzalo’s spokesperson) made it known that Nay’s busy schedule clashed with the shooting of Uzalo. Hence, the show’s storylines had to be edited to accommodate his absence and ultimate departure. Fans are still hopeful that he will return to the show.
In March 2021, it was reported that Jet Novuka, who plays the character of Captain Mpambani, would be leaving the show after only joining in July 2020. The main reason Jet was written off the show was to make the show’s storyline more compelling by eliminating characters who were deemed weak.
Nyalleng Thibedi joined Uzalo in 2017 and played the character of Zekhethelo. She left after the Friday, 10th September 2021 episode of Uzalo, following back and forth on her departure or not.
Baby Cele Left Uzalo but Latter Returned
Baby Cele, who plays the character of Gabisile, left the show earlier in 2021 after speculations had been rife in the previous year that she and others would be leaving the show. Cele finally left the show at the end of its 6th season. Though no particular reason was given for this departure, it is generally believed that better opportunities presented themselves to the actor.
Be that as it may, Baby Cele made a comeback to the show in the 20th August episode. Earlier, her character was interimly written off when there was a funeral for her, but her cadaver was not shown. She was later found by the river bank still alive. Baby did not return to the show alone as Nothando Ngcobo and Andile Msomi, who played Hlelo and Mthunzi, joined the Uzalo cast.
