OR Tambo International Airport Ousts SAA AS Africa’s Best Airline


South African Airways (SAA) has over the years, received various prestigious awards for their services and innovation but this time, a notable airline, OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg shines out as it received Africa’s leading airport in the 2016 World Travel Awards for Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Three airports out of seven were nominated for Africa’s Leading Airport award for 2016. They include South Africa’s Cape Town International Airport, King Shaka International Airport in Durban and OR Tambo International Airport.

Aside south African airports, other African airport nominees include Cairo International Airport in Egypt, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Mohammed V International Airport in Morocco.

OR Tambo later ousted all of the above mentioned airports in the continent to claim the top laurels for the 23rd World Travel Awards, voted for by travel and tourism professionals worldwide.

More to this, the winners of Africa and the Indian Ocean were also announced at a gala event hosted by Diamonds La Gemma dell’Est on the northern tip of Zanzibar, off Tanzania’s coast among which  Kenya Airways was recognized as both Africa’s Leading Airline and Africa’s Leading Airline for Business Class.

In winning the leading airline award, Kenya Airways unseated SAA which has for long been SA’s flag bearer in the category.

However, some other South African companies were crowned leaders in Africa. They include online booking site Travelstart, crowned ‘Africa’s Leading Online Travel Agency’, Rhino Africa, Singita Game Reserves and Shambala Private Reserve which were all crowned leading safari companies in Africa.

Meanwhile in other categories, Nairobi Serena Hotel in Kenya took the title of Africa’s Leading Green Hotel, while Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination went to the Maldives.

The World Travel Awards which was established in 1993, was set up to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.

This award brand is at present recognized worldwide as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
