Popular SABC2 soapie 7de Laan made history on Thursday night when the local soapie showed two handsome male characters sharing a kiss.
Fans are really excited that the soapie has decided to spice things up after 17 years on air. The historic moment was the local soapie’s first same-sex kiss.
Though the scene was part of a sub-plot and not one of the lead characters, viewers are going crazy talking about it. This could be because only a few local soapies have aired same-sex kisses.
In 2006, Isidingo had a gay wedding and kiss. And in 2009, Generations aired a gay kiss when Senzo locked lips with Jason. Also, Nomzamo Mbatha and Khanyi Mbau left Mzansi speechless after a titillating lesbian sex scene on the e.tv’s popular drama series Umlilo.
Moments such as the aforementioned are not usually common in local soapies. Thus, fans couldn’t get over it when 7de Laan aired its gay kiss.
In the historic episode – Oppiekoffie waitresses Amorey (Kristen Raath) and Petro (Carla van der Merwe) were seen with dismay on their faces. Notably, they have both had a crush on handsome Logan (Simon Tuit), only to find out that he’s actually gay when he kisses his husband, Divan (Arnu de Villiers), right in front of them. Logan was on the verge of filing for divorce when Divan walked in to apologise for everything he had done wrong. Subsequently, they kissed and made up.
The episode has seen mixed reactions from fans who flooded social media with comments.
Shaakira Stemmet wrote; “Yay for 7deLaan for breaking boundaries! It’s high time you needed a gay couple. They’re such an oulike couple too. To the homophobes: Welcome to the real world.”
Johan Wait wrote; “Congratulations 7de Laan for the reality scene. It’s about time…”
Sadly there were also some homophobic comments on the show’s Facebook page, but Channel24 won’t be sharing them here.
Beverly Witten-de Vos had a different opinion; “I’m am so disgusted and disappointed at tonights episode. Young ones are also watching how can you confuse such minds. Goodbye to my favorite soapie.”
Elijah Lambert added; “What is becoming of our world, this soapie must be replaced by an african soapie these people are confusing our kids”
However, some fans took it upon themselves to point out that 7de Laan is not responsible for raising the younger generation. That would be the job of their parents.
