SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng has prohibited all SABC radio stations from reading newspaper headlines.
You’ll recall that the state broadcaster was heavily condemned when it recently decided that it will no longer show footage of destruction of public property during protests.
The broadcasting corporation then, argued that broadcasting such news with footage showing the destruction of public property is promoting such attitudes and will encourage other communities to act in similar manner.
Adding to that, SABC introduced another form of censorship. This time, it banned all SABC radio stations from reading newspaper headlines.
Although the state media outlet is yet to make an official proclamation about this, the Democratic Alliance party said they were “reliably informed ” about the ban.
Arguing that the reading of newspaper headlines is a worldwide practice on radio and TV stations employed to review stories currently in the news cycle, DA stated:
“The banning of the reading of newspapers can only be viewed as yet another attempt by Motsoeneng to censor any negative news stories about the ANC on SABC radio stations ahead of the local government election.
This is part of an on-going programme driven by Motsoeneng to only portray “sunshine news” about the ANC on SABC stations.
It is clear that through Motsoeneng, the ANC is controlling the SABC ahead of the election and will stop at nothing to ensure that South Africans are kept in the dark in the run-up to the elections.”
To DA, the only way SABC will become South Africa’s public broadcaster of pride is if it’s “protected from careerists like Hlaudi Motsoeneng who will stop at nothing to please their political masters.
He has been the driver of the ‘Zumafication’ of the public broadcaster and has been protected and promoted by the ANC despite several findings against him in court and by the Public Protector,” added the party.
