In the bid to get to greener pastures, Umhlobo Wenene’s breakfast host Putco Mafani has ditched the station to join a new commercial radio station called Rhythm.
The radio presenter will reportedly be the breakfast host as well as the station manager at the new station which will be based in East London. Putco Mafani, who hosts iBreakfast Eyondlayo Ekuseni (BEE) at umhlobo has more than three million listeners. Apparently, his departure is a big blow on the station.
Confirming Mafani’s new job, Given Mkhari, the CEO of MSG Afrika Group said the station would go live before the end of July.
“I can confirm that Mafani is part of the team. As a result, I need him in Johannesburg in the next few weeks because we will be doing auditions. Since he will be a host and leader, we’re hoping that he will lead by example.”
Rhythm is one of MSG Afrika Group’s ventures. Some other investments under the company’s name include; Capricorn FM in Polokwane and Power FM in Johannesburg.
The new station will broadcast mostly in English and isiXhosa.
Though he initially denied it, Bob Mabena will also join Rhythm, a source at MSG confirmed.
The veteran had said that his contract with Kaya FM was still valid for three months and that he was not making any future plans to leave his new family.
While Mkhari neither confirmed nor denied that Mabena will be a part of Rhythm, Mafani expressed happiness over his migration.
“Being part of the first black-owned commercial radio station in the Eastern Cape is a dream come true. I have always been passionate about radio since I was young,” he said.
Besides, Mafani believes that Rhythm will help to open up the industry for raw talent to shine.
