Scientists and doctors from five of Britain’s leading universities designed a new HIV therapy which seems to have erased HIV from a patient’s blood.
Now, the patient, a 44-year-old British man hopes to become the first in the world to be cured of the disease with the new HIV therapy.
He’s the first of 50 people to complete the trial therapy designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses.
And, medical tests have indicated that the virus is undetectable in the blood of the previously HIV-positive man after he was treated with the new therapy.
The new HIV therapy is said to be unique as it is designed to hunt and destroy HIV in every part of the body, including the dormant cells that escape current treatments.
Speaking about the new therapy, Mark Samuels of Britain’s National Institute for Health Research said: “this is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV.
“We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”
Also, a consultant physician and professor at Imperial College London, Sarah Fidler commented that the therapy is specifically designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses, including dormant ones.
“It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too. But, we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy.
“We will continue with medical tests for the next five years and at the moment we are not recommending stopping Art but in the future depending on the test results we may explore this,” Fidler remarked.
BuzzSouthAfrica gathered that the new therapy works in two stages. First, a vaccine assists the body to recognize HIV-infected calls so as to clear them out.
After-that, a new drug called Vorinostat is introduced to activate the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system.
Records have it that only one man, Timoth Ray Brown has ever been cured of HIV. He received a bone marrow transplant from a patient with natural immunity to HIV.
The stem cells he received rebuilt his immune system and eradicating HIV in his body.
