Municipal Manager Paul Hatting And His Women Arrested Over R70m Fraud


A municipal manager in Cape Town‚ his wife and his girlfriend were released from confinement on R50‚000 bail each after they were arrested for allegedly defrauding the City of Cape Town of R70 million.

42-year-old Paul Hatting who is an administrator at the City of Cape Town and sits at the tender board‚ allegedly awarded tenders to his personal company‚ his wife’s company as well as the company owned by his girlfriend between 2008 and 2014.

This transaction cost the city a lot of money. The total sum which the three are alleged to have fraudulently siphoned amounted to R70 million‚ according to the police. This expensive love triangle could make the city bankrupt.

“The Hawks in the Western Cape were made aware of the fraud in 2014 and an in-depth investigation ensued‚ leading to the arrest of Mr Hatting‚ Simoney Ulanda Hatting (his wife) and Esmeralda Plato who is believed to be Mr Hatting’s girlfriend‚” the directorate said in a statement made to this regard.

The three companies owned by Paul Hatting and his women were named as follows: Cosmic Gold 532‚ Cosmic Gold 517 and TTANIC Trading. These companies were awarded tenders to supply the City of Cape Town with cleaning materials as well as refuse bags and each tender costs between R900‚000 and R45 million.

Paul Hatting and his women who have been charged with fraud and corruption‚ have appeared at the Bellville Commercial Court where they were granted a bail of R50,000 each but they will be appearing in court again on 17 March 2016.

Hawks National head‚ Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza said “I had stated on my first day in office that I will impose 500 percent transparency and adopt zero tolerance for corruption‚”

“Corruption is an ill that has to be removed from our midst as it denies our people what they rightfully expect from government. Those who are involved or intend to get involved must beware” He added.

This form of corruption remains a big obstacle for the development of our country. When huge amounts of money keep disappearing into the pockets of administrators and are used for their selfish interests, what will be left to run the city with?
