The North West Police confirmed on Monday that the son of Tlokwe Mayor Kgotso Khumalo was stabbed to death over the weekend.
The lifeless body of Khumalo’s son, Mike Maimane, 30, was found by a passerby with multiple stab wounds in the early hours of Sunday 19 February in Extension 11 in the Ikageng township.
Until his death, Maimane was the eldest son and had three sisters. He was not married but he had a child.
Khumalo’s spokesperson Victor Boqo said the family is saddened by the death of the young man. He added that the family is further devastated because Maimane was the only son.
“Everybody is very emotional about the murder. He was Khumalo’s only son. You can see the sadness and pain written all over his face. We encourage the police to do everything in its power to track down the perpetrator/s of this horrendous, criminal and selfish act.
On behalf of Council and the Executive Mayor’s Office, we would like to express our deepest and sincerest condolences and sympathies with the Khumalo family with the loss of their dear son,” Boqo said.
The police disclosed that they are investigating a case of murder.
The family called on anyone with information that can assist the police in finding the culprits responsible for the killing to please contact the Ikageng Police at (018) 295 1731.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in North West has sent its condolences to the Executive Mayor of Tlokwe, Kgotso Khumalo and his family, following the loss.
DA Councillor Chris Landsberg said his party has urged the police to intensify investigations into the killing and ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
The mayor’s son would be laid to rest on Saturday at the Govan Mbeki Hall in Ikageng, Potchefstroom.
