Was There A Momentary Awkwardness As Gareth Cliff Joins Judges On SA Idols Season 12?

Fans who anticipated awkwardness in the SA Idols season 12 because of the M-Net Gareth Cliff debacle were surprised at how the show kicked off without a hitch.

The broadcaster took the bull by the horn and kicked off the first episode of the all new season on Sunday.

It addressed the issue as the show kicked off by airing clips of various media reports on the incident involving Gareth Cliff.

Some videos of people auditioning for the show shouting ‘We love Gareth’ and holding posters in support of the judge were also displayed.

Right before Gareth joins fellow judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengani and Somizi Mhlongo on stage, host proVerb declared “He’s back.”

“Hi guys,” Gareth hailed fellow judges as they gave him the side eye. Then he took a selfie announcing that he’s going to put the image on Twitter. The other judges seemed to disapprove as they pounced on him, chorusing “noooooo…”

Cliff was initially axed from the show by M-Net following a massive public outcry about a comment he made on Twitter.

Relentless, Cliff took the matter to court and won the case.

Thus, M-Net had to reinstate him as a judge on the Idols show in accordance with the decision by the court.

The whole drama left many wondering how the broadcaster would handle the appearance of Gareth on the show’s next season which premiered Sunday night.

Talented Durban residents were seen taking their best shot at becoming SA’s next Idol with flamboyant reality TV star Somizi doing what he does best.
