South African local elections have just been concluded as voting results 2016 for the SA elections are being released. According to the Independent Electoral Commission, voting went smoothly in most parts of the country apart from a few incidents.
Election Results South Africa – key Incidents
Some of the key incidents that took place was the dismissal of IEC staffers in Durban for irregularities in voting administration and for failing to adhere to the rules set out for the special vote that took place on Monday and Tuesday but the overall voting process was smooth.
The Chief Electoral Officer: Mosotho Moepya also mentioned that the bad weather in certain parts of the country (Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Northern Cape) wasn’t helpful as up to 30 tents were reported as being badly affected by strong winds which led to the re-location of voting in these areas to places with more permanent structures
There were also reports of alleged shooting close to a voting station in Limpopo
Moepya said overall, the election had been peaceful and encouraged people to vote if they hadn’t already.
According to Moepya, the voting process went according to plan and that the polling booths were mostly free of major incidents.
All the voting stations were reported as open and all logistical and other challenges which impacted voting earlier had been resolved.
There were very long queues in some of the voting centres but this is largely expected.
