Ekurhuleni Freeway Pile-up: A horrific pile-up on the N12 freeway in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday left dozens of drivers and passengers fighting for their lives in hospital.
Thirty-four people were reportedly taken to hospital for emergency treatment after a massive pile-up involving about 30 vehicles earlier on Tuesday.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha described the scene as horrific.
“We arrived to find that multiple vehicles had collided on the road …. It is quite a horrific scene‚ especially at the start of Human Rights’ Day‚” said Botha.
Shattered cars and trucks littered the freeway near the Putfontein off-ramp as paramedics struggled to save lives.
Following news of the crash, there were conflicting reports about whether anybody was killed. While Netcare 911 spokesman, Botha said one person was killed, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesman William Ntladi said one person was in a critical condition.
According to Botha, up to 60 people were involved in the crash He added that not all those who sustained injuries may have gone immediately to hospital.
“With big accident scenes like this it’s hard to tell the exact numbers because there are various ambulances and personnel on scene‚” said Botha.
On the other hand, Ntladi said that about 30 vehicles were involved in the crash These include seven heavy duty trucks.
“We are clearing up the scene and quite a few vehicles have been towed off the freeway‚” said Ntladi.
“The N12 will be closed off for quite some time as it will take a while to clear that road‚” added Botha.
Also, at least one bus and one taxi were reportedly involved in the crash. The cause of the crash was not immediately ascertained.
