The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) nabbed customs officials for smuggling cocaine.
SAPS related that two Customs officials from OR Tambo International Airport were arrested for smuggling cocaine worth R2 million.
The suspects allegedly smuggled out an unaccompanied suite case which arrived on a flight from Brazil and left it at the international arrival hall security passenger exit gate.
Luckily, Hawks’ Organised Crime Unit members kept observing the suspects and confronted them as they tried to make way to the exit gate.
When Hawks members opened and searched the suite case, they discovered about 6kg of cocaine wrapped in clothing. It was subsequently valued for R2 million.
The suspects aged 29 and 35 will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court for dealing cocaine, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Last week, SAPS seized Mandrax with an estimated street value of R26.4 million in Harare. Members of Harare was conducting an intelligence driven operation at an informal dwelling when they discovered an underground storage facility for the mandrax.
Five suspects aged between 20 and 54 were apprehended for being in possession of the 529 000 mandrax tablets.
Meanwhile, BuzzSouthAfrica gathered that three suspects believed to be EFF student command members of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have been arrested for corruption.
As learnt, the EFF student command members will appear before the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria on Thursday. One of the suspects is a serving member of the Student Representative Council. The others are former TUT students.
They allegedly demanded R100 000 from a security company owner in exchange for having the company’s contract extended by the institution.
Fortunately, the National Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit and Crime Intelligence got hold of the information. As such, an undercover operation was initiated.
The operation subsequently led to the arrest of the trio shortly after they received R40 000 in cash.
