Zuma Okays Public Nomination Of Names For National Orders

President Jacob Zuma has given a nod to members of the public to nominate deserving people whom they consider fit to receive South Africa’s highest honors, the National Orders.

The presidency said in a statement on Wednesday that the National Order honours South Africans and eminent foreign nationals who have contributed to the achievement of a free‚ united‚ nonracial‚ democratic‚ nonsexist and prosperous South Africa.

“Also honored are citizens who have sacrificed life and limb to save others and those who have excelled in various fields,” it added.

National Orders

The six National orders that are bestowed on deserving recipients include:

– The Order of Mendi for Bravery

(Category: I Gold; II Silver and III Bronze)

This Award recognizes South African citizens who have performed acts of bravery.

– The Order of Ikhamanga

(Category: I Gold; II Silver and III Bronze)

This award is bestowed on South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts‚ culture‚ literature‚ music‚ journalism and sport.

– The Order of the Baobab

(Category: I Gold; II Silver and III Bronze)



This award recognizes South African citizens who have contributed to community service‚ business and economy‚ science‚ medicine and technological innovation.

– The Order of Luthuli

(Category: I Gold; II Silver and III Bronze)

This award recognizes South African citizens who have contributed to the struggle for democracy‚ nation-building‚ building democracy and human rights‚ justice and peace as well as for the resolution of conflict.

– The Order of Mapungubwe

(Category: I Platinum; II Gold, III Silver, and IV Bronze)

This award is received by South Africans who have excelled and attained exceptional achievement to the benefit of South Africa and beyond.

– The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo

(Category: I Gold; II Silver and III Bronze)

This award recognizes eminent foreign nationals for friendship shown to South Africa‚ and is therefore an order of peace‚ cooperation and active expression of solidarity and support.

Meanwhile, nominations forms are available on the Presidency website while deadline for the 2017 nominations is August 31.
