Search for an awaiting trial prisoner is currently underway in the Tembisa Magistrate’s court in Ekurhuleni after he overpowered, shot and killed a police captain earlier this morning.
The prisoner has been identified as Bomba Shongwe while the police officer has been named as a Captain Lamola.
It is understood that Shongwe, who was being held at the Johannesburg Prison escaped from the holding cells after he fatally shot the police officer.
The police officer was escorting the suspect to court and “while making their way up the stairs, the suspect disarmed the officer and shot him,” a witness disclosed.
Witnesses At Tembisa’s Magistrate’s Court Tell It All
Another witness, who arrived at the court shortly after the incidence, said they refused to attend to him after he managed to gain entrance into the building.
“I went there to file my papers at court and I was turned away. I was told that there has been a serious shooting and therefore I can not go in.
There were many police cars outside the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court you could not even get in. Everyone looked scared‚ it was as if they saw something very scary. People were just crying it was chaotic,” the witness narrated.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring confirmed that the police captain died on the scene after he succumbed to the “multiple gunshot wounds”. Various emergency services, who arrived later at the crime scene also declared the officer dead.
Provincial police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo promised to release a statement on the matter in a few hours.
Meanwhile, Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said an investigation is in progress to determine how the awaiting trial prisoner got hold of a firearm while he was in the court cells.
