A 2016 crime index for the world’s nations and its cities ranked South Africa the world’s 3rd crime-ridden nation.
Also, the index listed six South African cities in the top 20 dangerous cities with low safety index.
South Africa as ranked, is the world’s 3rd crime-ridden nation, after Venezuela and South Sudan. Mzansi’s city, Pietermaritzburg, was also ranked the world’s 2nd most unsafe city.
Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban were equally ranked the world’s 4th, 5th and 6th most unsafe cities respectively.
The index was complied by Numbeo which is often regarded as the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide.
Numbeo is known for it’s current and timely information pertaining to world living conditions. Like the cost of living, housing indicators, health care, traffic, crime and pollution.
The crime index according to Numbeo, is an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country.
Check out the rankings below but note that crime levels lower than 20 are regarded as very low, and those between 20 and 40 as just low.
Also, crime levels between 40 and 60 are regarded as being moderate, those between 60 and 80 as being high and those higher than 80 as very high.
Safety index however, is quite opposite of the crime index. If the city has a high safety index, it is considered very safe. The rankings were as shown below.
