Corruption Watch and the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit has exposed shady secrets and dealings of some Public Protector candidates.
As learnt, Corruption Watch conducted background checks on all the Public Protector candidates. It availed the information it unearthed to the ad hoc committee tasked to find a suitable replacement for Thuli Madonsela.
The background checks, a 144-page document contained information about the candidates. It practically assessed their suitability for the office via the examination of their personal and professional lives.
It linked some of the Public Protector candidates to shady secrets ranging from being buddies with the Guptas to rape, corruption charges and domestic conflict.
According to the Corruption Watch document, candidate Linda Mabaso is buddies with the Guptas.
An excerpt from the report read: “the Gupta’s long-time associate, Salim Essa is said to be the former business partner of Mabaso’s son, Malcolm Mabaso.
Malcolm was a director with Essa in a company called 48 Premium Security and Cleaning Services, but resigned in October 2015, presumably to take up the position with Minister of Mineral Resources Mosebenzi Zwane. Linda Mabaso is said to be close to the Guptas and to Zuma.”
Corruption Watch also questioned Themba Mthethwa suitability for the position. Mthethwa, a former CEO at the Office of the Public Protector, was suspended “for failing to disclose medical information that impacted on his appointment and for not revealing information about his suspension whilst at the SA Local Government Association,” the report indicated.
It further indicated that another candidate – Sophy Noko the director of public prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, stopped various high-profile prosecutions.
Noko worked with other individuals to stop the prosecution of Thoshan Panday a KwaZulu-Natal business man who allegedly tried to bribe the provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Johan Booysen, to make a case of fraud against him disappear.
