Media personality Bonang Matheba, Isibaya actress Nomzamo Mbatha and Nigerian singer Yemi Alade got a rare opportunity to host one of the biggest music events in Africa.
The opportunity came knocking after US-based comedian Trevor Noah suddenly pulled out of his gig to host the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) due to health issues. All eyes were on the all-female host trio on Saturday night in Johannesburg.
Thus, the trio had just a few hours to get their acts together which includes choosing outfits that will turn more than a few heads. In fact, all eyes were on the all-female host team on Saturday night at The TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg.
Media personality Bonang was full of gratitude to her New York-based stylist Harrison T. Crite who answered when she called. Apparently, Harrison contributed a lot to what we saw on the red carpet.
“Harrison had two hours to source everything. I’m very grateful that he was available and worked hard to make sure my night and looks were perfect,” Bonang said.
She added that she has been preparing for this for thirteen years through hard work and dedication.
“The overall night was a dream come true, 13 years of hard work and dedication led me to one of the biggest moments in my career.”
However, we cannot say the same for actress Nomzamo Mbatha who admitted to being petrified as it was her first time to host such a big award show.
“When I got the call in the early hours of Friday morning, I was petrified. But Monde Twala calmed me down with his words of faith and trust in my capabilities,” Mbatha recalls
“My approach was never to be anyone else other than the girl from KwaMashu, who loves to laugh and knows how to have fun with herself.”
Nevertheless, if her countenance and charisma on the red carpet are anything to go by, then Nomzamo was very confident for a first timer.
The glitzy ceremony held in Johannesburg was a beehive of activities with on-point stage performances. Celebs also graced the red carpet, while showing off their glamorous fashion sense.
South African golden girl Caster, rapper Cassper Nyovest and Emtee made us proud with prestigious awards won in different categories. Shekhinah and Kyle Deutsch won Best Pop & Alternative.
In addition, SA legend Hugh Masekela won the MTV Legend award at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards. Meanwhile, Nigerian star Wizkid scooped both Artist of the Year and Best Male.
