Following speculations that newly-elected mayor of Johannesburg, Mayor Herman Mashaba enlisted his personal friends on the metro’s MMC list, the mayor has repudiated the notions as untrue and baseless.
Mashaba downplayed the suppositions shortly after he unveiled the ten-member mayoral committee.
The mayor was sworn in today by Gauteng Judge, President Dunstan Mlambo. Coincidentally, today also marks his 57th birthday.
Refuting the allegation at the Johannesburg Theatre, he said: “These people before me are not my friends. They are the best team to take the city of Johannesburg forward.”
He further expressed confidence that he chose the most capable hands in Johannesburg – the team comprises of three doctors, a professor, and a community activist. In addition, he disclosed that five years is not a long time for their massive task ahead
Eight of his mayoral committee members are pulled from the Democratic Alliance (DA); while the remaining two are Inkatha Freedom Party members.
The committee members include:
- Housing: Mzobanzi Ntuli [IFP]
- Transport Nonhlanhla: Helen Makhuba [IFP]
- Economic Development: Sharon Peetz [DA]
- Environment and Infrastructure Services: Anthony Still [DA]
- Development planning: Funzela Ngubeni [DA]
- Community Development: Nonhlanhla Sifumba [DA]
- Health and Social Development: Mpho Phalatse [DA]
- Public Safety: Michael Son [DA]
- Finance: Rabelani Dagada [DA]
- Corporate and Shared Services: Valencia Khumalo [DA]
Mashaba emerged as Joburg’s mayor on August 22, promising to end corruption and ushering in a new political era in the country’s coveted municipality.
His victory in the key metro came after he secured the support of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Mayor Herman Mashaba Is J’oburg’s Symbolic ‘Jesus’
Sarcastically, DA’s Mashaba is the symbolic ‘Jesus’ that has come back to Johannesburg. His emergence is tied to president Zuma’s statement that “The ANC will rule until Jesus Christ returns” – a statement he used to convince people that the EFF, DA or any other party can never govern Johannesburg.
Johannesburg mayor Mashaba is an investor in mining, construction, exhibitions and events, real estate, fuel distribution and logistics, power generation, bullet proof materials, and insurance.
