Cases of child and infant rape in South Africa is highly ranked worldwide. Statistics show that an estimated 500,000 rape cases take place in the South Africa every year. Reports say that children are the victims of 41 percent of all rapes reported in the country. This statistics was obtained from the South African Police Service. Also, South Africa’s Tears Foundation and the Medical Research Council opined that 50 percent of children living in South Africa are likely to be abused before they clock 18.
It is true that how data on rape are recorded has changed between 2005 and 2014. But between 2005 and 2006, a total number of 54, 926 women and girls were reportedly raped in South Africa. This figure is four times the reported number in the US. However, reports by Crime Statistics in 2014 shows that the rape cases declined to 46 253.
Undoubtedly, Rape cases have been considered a thorn in the flesh in most societies today. The worst hit have always been little girls between 9 and 14. Rape is an abuse on every victim. It brings a lot of effects on helpless victims. Therefore, it is necessary to put a stop to this trending menace. Worthily, It would be a good riddance to a bad rubbish if culprits are arrested and lawfully punished.
Also, stories from perpetrators indicate that most families do not keep an eye on their children. Others show loose parental care and neglect. And when a child is abused, the trauma gets the better part of her for numerous years. Most victims die in brokenness because of societal stigma. Others keep the pains to themselves in order to not break trust whereas little children don’t report to anyone at all because they don’t know who or where to run to. Lessons should be drawn from Kurt Cobain, who said,
“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.”
