A lucky soldier was miraculously found alive but in critical condition after six days of being buried under 25 feet of snow after the avalanche that happened on February 3 on the Siachen glacier.
It was an amazing miracle that happened in the highest battleground of the world, where one of the ten personnel who had gone missing in the avalanche was found alive.
The survivor has been identified as Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad (resident of Betadur, Dharwad district of Karnataka) belonging to the 19 Madras regiment.
“Lance Naik Hanamanthappa has been found alive. He is critical but all attempts are being made to evacuate him to RR hospital in the morning. We hope the miracle continues. Pray with us,” Army Commander Northern Command Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda said.
On February 3, 10 soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, were hit by a massive avalanche at an altitude of 19,600 feet.
“The teams are working round the clock and observing all precautions since the unstable ice and snow in the region could trigger fresh avalanches. Rescue efforts will continue till all our soldiers are found,” said the spokesman.
The unstable state of the ice and snow in the area makes the risk of fresh avalanches high.
However, there is no hope for the remaining 9 soldiers as four bodies have been recovered and the other five are yet to be located.
The nation was hit with shock over the news of 10 soldiers vanishing as a result of the avalanche in the Siachen Glacier. The catastrophe led to one of the toughest and advanced search operations with special equipment to cut through the thick snow pile up with specialized Army teams and sniffer dogs. The whole operation took place under the harsh weather and dangerous environment.
The miraculous rescue of the lucky soldier came at a time when almost everyone had lost any hope of finding any survivor in the disaster.
Depending on how favorable the weather is, the surviving lucky soldier will be airlifted out of Siachen for proper medical attention.
