Kelly-Anne Elskie, the lover of suspended SARS tax chief Jonas Makwakwa has been suspended after the tax chief allegedly deposited R450,200 into her bank account.
SARS spokesman Sandile Memela who confirmed the suspension on Friday told reporters that “Ms. Kelly-Anne Elksie has been suspended pending an investigation into an allegation of suspicious deposits into her personal account and other related issues.
SARS has appointed an independent and reputable international law firm, Hogan Lovells, to investigate the matter… SARS will not comment further until the investigation is completed.”
Reports say that apart from the money deposited into his lover’s account, Makwakwa also deposited R1.2m in various bank accounts – including a payment made on a Mercedes Benz C220 Bluetec, allegedly given to Elskie as a 27th birthday present.
Makwakwa’s lover’s suspension was prompted by media reports against the lovebirds. The media intervened after a report on the transaction was received by SARS head Tom Moyane from a banking regulator in May.
Speaking on Sunday, Treasury spokesperson Yolisa Tyantsi said it’s still unclear if SARS has tabled Elskie’s suspension before Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
She, however, admitted that “Anything that affects the head of SARS, Treasury will know. This is an internal matter. However, there are rules and regulations which govern such matters.”
Kelly-Anne Elskie Investigated For Other Related Issues
Meanwhile, Kelly-Anne Elskie’s suspension remains effective pending an investigation by international law firm Hogan Lovells into alleged suspicious deposits and other related issues are concluded.
Ms. Elskie was allegedly transferred from SARS’ anti-corruption and security division (ACAS) – where she worked as a personal assistant to the position of a junior consultant at the SARS in March last year wth the help of Makwakwa.
Prior to her transfer and deposition of the money, Makwakwa was the head of two senior positions at SARS. He was the audit group executive and acting chief operations officer.
