Former North West Mayor Kaone Lobelo Dies In Car Crash

Former executive mayor of Greater Taung Local Municipality, in North West Province Mr. Kaone Lobelo has died.

Information from the police desk revealed that the former mayor died in a car accident after he lost control of the bakkie he was driving, which overturned on the road between Reivilo and Taung on Saturday night.

The 58-year-old was reportedly trapped in the car in the course of the tragic accident. He was later certified dead on the scene by the emergency services personnel.

Prior to his death, Lobelo served as both mayor of the Greater Taung Local Municipality as well as the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. He also served as chairperson of the South African Local Government Association in the North West from 2011 until October 2016.

At the time of his death, he was a deputy chairperson of the North West geographical names committee.

Mahumapelo Mourns Kaone Lobelo

In the meantime, Premier Supra Mahumapelo has expressed his profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the Lobelo family and people of Greater Taung Local Municipality, on the passing away of Mr. Kaone Lobelo.



He admitted that the former mayor’s death was a great loss to the entire North West province and not just to the people of the Greater Taung Local Municipality.

“We have learned with a great shock of this tragic incident. During this time of mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the late Mr. Kaone Lobelo, whose death is a great loss to not only the people of Greater Taung Local Municipality but the entire province,” Mahumapelo said.

Reacting to the shocking news, MEC for Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs Mme Ontlametse Mochware expressed deep shock about Lobelo’s painful demise.

“The tragic news of the passing on of one of our own, Mr. Kaone Lobelo is saddening. Death has robbed us of a competent, passionate and dedicated leader of the provincial Geographical Names Committee. May his soul rest in peace,” Mochware said.

Meanwhile, the Reivilo police said it is investigating a case of culpable homicide.
