Wits University says it’s aware of a voice clip that has circulated on social media inciting violence against particular race groups.
The circulating voice clip was reportedly sent by a student protester.
It says at least one white student has to be killed to get the attention of the institution’s vice-chancellor, Adam Habib pertaining the agitation of the students.
As learnt, the voice note was recorded by some unknown lady who said the vice chancellor is complicating the crisis on campus. According to the clip, students wanting to return to class will be walking straight into an ambush.
“…They are saying that in order to get Habib’s attention, at least one white student must die whether male or female that is the only way that they’ll get Habib to meet the demands of the protesters,” stated an excerpt from the voice clip below.
Reacting, the management of the university issued a statement saying the voice note will be investigated.
“We are aware of a voice cilp that has circulated on social media inciting violence against particular race groups. please do not continue to share these clips.
“The information has been passed on to the Wits security and legal teams, as well as the police, and will be investigated. We are requesting anyone with further information about the source of the clip to share it with the Head of Security, Mr. Mokgawa Kobe…,” stated the institution.
It was yesterday that Wits University management announced that an agreement had been reached with the Black Student Society and Student Representative Council (SRC) for the academic programme to resume next Monday.
The institution also agreed to withdraw police to the perimeter of the university’s campuses following a commitment from parties that there will be no violence.
“We have made this concession because we do not want the scenes that played out on our university campuses to be repeated. Such scenes put our students and staff on edge and do not enable a full resumption of the academic programme.
“If a negotiated outcome can achieve this end, then we will be all the stronger as a university community. The student constituency is as committed as we are to salvaging the 2016 academic year,” proclaimed Wits.
