Democratic Alliance councillor Chris Roberts has been demoted as the chief whip of the party. Not only that, he was also fined a whooping sum of R10 000 for referring to his political rival in the United Democratic Movement (UDM) as a “bobbejaan”.
Perhaps, you don’t know what “bobbejaan” means. “Bobbejaan” in English interpretation simply means “baboon”. Reports said that during a conference debate last July, Chris Roberts had labelled his political rival Mongameli Bobani a” baboon”.
Thereafter, a disciplinary panel was set up to look into the cases. However, the chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council James Selfe said that proper actions have been taken against the bad-mouthed council. James said
“He has been strongly admonished.”
“He was fined R10 000. It was a recommendation from the disciplinary panel. That penalty was ratified on Saturday.”
Selfe also stated that Councillor Charles was barred from occupying any leadership position. Charles Roberts was the chief whip in Nelson Mandela Bay caucus.
Notably, Robert’s sanction is one out of the many cases dragged to court by African National Congress (ACN) few weeks ago. It would be recalled that ACN had laid charges against Dianne Kohler Barnard, Penny Sparrow and Velaphi Khumalo. Kohler is a member of parliament in Democratic Alliance party while Khumalo is Gauteng department worker.
Penny Sparrow, an estate agent and former member of the Democratic Alliance party was fined R200 000 for comparing blacks to a monkey. A hate speech that pulled numerous mixed reactions from South Africans.
Kohler was initially fined R500 000 by ANC for sharing a post that called for the emergence of former South African president PW Botha in South Africa. Botha was South Africa’s president during the apartheid regime. However, after rendering her apology she was fined R20,000.
Since this year, so many racial comments and speeches have come up in South Africa. Some of these posts made negative waves in the social media. Also, these posts have stirred up unusual alerts and actions among South Africans. Many have also called for immediate and strict punishment for people who promote racism in any form. The ruling party has made it clear to racists that constitutional actions would be taken on anyone found guilty.
Democratic Alliance is the main opposition party to the governing African National Congress in South Africa. There are several political parties in South Africa. Some of them include: African Christian Democratic Party, African Independent Party, African National Congress (ACN), African Peoples’ Convention, Agang South Africa, Congress of the People, Democratic Alliance, United Democratic Movement, Freedom Front Plus etc.
Meanwhile former DA’s parliament member has called on Democratic Alliance to take a proper and close look at the dominance of white folks in the party’s “Brain Trust”. Ms Lindiwe Mazibuko made this call when she charged the party to address racial inequality in the party.
