Chief executive officer of Sotheby International Realty Jason Rohde has been taken into custody as part of the investigation into the death of his wife Susan.
Rohde was reportedly arrested early Tuesday morning irrespective of his previous arrangement with the police.
According to his lawyer Daniel Witz, he met with police last week and it was agreed that he would “voluntarily hand himself over” when the time comes.
However, at 6:30am on Tuesday‚ several officers stormed his house in Bryanston, Johannesburg‚ and took him into custody while his three daughters watched.
“The girls are quite traumatised …. He is still in shock and can’t understand why they went back on the agreement.”
Meanwhile, police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said their investigation changed to murder after a post mortem was performed.
“He is due to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder.”
47-year-old Susan Rohde was found dead in a bathroom at the Spier Wine Estate in Stellenboschon July 24. Sotheby had hosted its annual conference at the estate and they stayed over for the weekend.
Jason Rohde allegedly raised alarm when he could not open the door to their bathroom. His lawyer explained that his client and his wife had woken up together that Sunday morning.
“She went into the bathroom to get ready and he fell asleep. When he awoke to get ready for a breakfast talk, he was unable to open the door.”
Subsequently, hotel maintenance was called to assist. When the door was opened, he found his wife hanged behind the door. However, after Suzan’s death was ruled as murder, they commissioned pathological and forensic reports.
Meanwhile, there were allegations of the couple getting involved in an argument on Saturday night. But Witz dismissed this as irrelevant.
