On January 28th, 2014, Zululand Observer reported that a community leader in Aquadene, Richards Bay named Dumisani Ndlazi, raped a 19-year-old girl whom he allegedly promised to help get enrolled at a local high school. The victim just arrived from Johannesburg to stay with her family members in Richards Bay and also further her education.
Trying to secure enrollment for the girl at a local high school in the community, her family approached Dumisani Ndlazi to help out as he’s a prominent person in the community. The girl and her relative visited his house, and he gave them some documents to complete and told them to deliver the outstanding paperwork the next day.
When the young lady returned to Dumisani Ndlazi’s house at 7:30 AM on January 14th, 2014, he allegedly invited her inside his house and raped her. Her family opened a case of rape at Richards Bay police station, which was subsequently transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigations. Dumisani was arrested and charged with rape on the same day of the incident.

Two weeks after his arrest, Dumisani Ndlazi appeared at Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail of R3,000. He subsequently made appearances in court and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on March 8th, 2016. It is however unclear how long he spent in jail.
