Ibrahim Chappelle’s mum is Elaine Mendoza Erfe. Born on the 31st of August 1973, Elaine is of Filipino American roots. The records didn’t reveal her exact place of birth but she spent a better part of her growing up years in Brooklyn New York.

As opposed to her husband who converted to Islam, Elaine comes from a devoted Christian background and still follows the Christian faith despite being married to a muslin for more than two decades and counting.

Talking about Elaine’s career life, she reportedly developed a keen interest in cooking during her formative years and aspired to work as a chef when the time was right. However, Elaine changed her plans after getting married and having kids, as she decided to become a a full-time housewife and mother. Her major preoccupation is spending quality time with Dave and the children.

Ibrahim’s Parents were Married when they had Him

David Chappelle and his wife, Elaine Mendoza Erfe were two years into their marriage when they welcomed their middle child, Ibrahim, in 2003.

The interracial couple first crossed paths in the 1990s in New York City. At that time, David was relatively unknown as he was still trying to get his entertainment career off the ground. According to reports, Ibrahim Chappelle’s mother refused to give David attention when he tried to talk to her for the first time, claiming that the comedian was not her type as he was extremely loud.

However, Elaine later realized that all the loudness she accused David of stemmed from his shyness towards her. When she eventually accepted him, they dated for a short time, though the details of their dating period are not known. Assured of Elaine’s love, the American comedian wasted no time in popping the big question and of course, he got a “yes” answer.

The interracial couple went ahead to exchange wedding vows in 2001, however, the type of ceremony they had is not known. Perhaps the lack of attention at their nuptials was because Dave had not achieved the level of fame he enjoys today.

Despite their cultural; and religious differences, the interracial couple has lived together as husband and wife for over two decades. Dave said he is super proud of his wife whom he calls his best support system. She stood by him even when he had to walk away from the entertainment scene and her support is like a glue that holds their union together.

Ibrahim Chappelle is the middle child of the Chappelle family. He has an older brother who goes by the name, Sulayman Chappelle. Born in 2001, Sulayman is two years older than Ibrahim. The oldest child of the Chappelle brood passed through the public school system in the United States and is currently of university age. However, it is not known whether he has enrolled in any college. Ibrahim’s big brother seems to be talented in using flowery words and fills his time writing poetry, though he is yet to do anything notable in the field.

Ibrahim’s younger sibling is a girl who goes by the name, Sonal ‘Sanna’ Chappelle. Born in 2009, Sonal is only 15 and out of all her siblings, she appears to be the only one following in their father’s footsteps. She has already made her acting debut.

Sonal was barely nine when she scored a role in A Star is Born – a 2018 movie where she starred alongside her dad. While Dave played the role of Noodles, his little girl was featured as his onscreen daughter. On the set of A Star is Born, father and daughter shared the screen with Bradley Cooper who essayed the role of Jackson Maine.

When the movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Sonal graced the occasion with her dad.

With their religious belief listed as Christianity, one would likely wonder why all the Chappelle siblings bear Muslim names. The reason for their Islamic names is that David converted to Islam in 1998 and decided to give all his children names that reflect his religion even though they prefer to follow their mother into Christianity.

Ibrahim Chappelle Enjoys a Great Relationship with His Parents

Ibrahim Chappelle shares a great bond with both parents. His mum seems to be the type that shies away from the public and thus, she is not always seen out and about town with her brood, but it is different with his dad who lives his life in the full glare of the public.

David Chappelle prides himself as a hands-on dad. According to the actor cum comedian, becoming a father altered his lifestyle forever and that was when he learned to take his work more seriously.

In an Interview session, the Hollywood star said he draws a lot of inspiration from his children which is a major reason his career life has continued to thrive.

On the set of his standup comedy shows, Ibrahim Chappelle’s dad sometimes uses his children as his subject. He once told a touching story about a time when his middle child, Ibrahim, gifted him with a necklace made from macaroni. Responding to the gesture, Dave said he told Ibrahim “You used to live in my balls”, and now, you are making me jewelry out of macaroni”.  Dave’s audience wasted no time in seeing the joke in the tale and the ensuing laughter was uncontrollable.

There was a time that the comedy scene became too hot for Dave as people were beginning to tag his jokes as extremely offensive. The father of three chose his family over his multi-million dollar career. He stepped away from the entertainment industry for years and went to raise his children on a farm he acquired in Ohio.

When quizzed about his reasons for taking such decisions, he said the kind of attention he was getting then would not be conducive for raising kids, thus, the decision to step off of the main stage.

From what is perceivable, the American comedian always has the interest of his children at heart and his rule number one is “Always tell your kids, I love you.”
