Music Was Toni Braxton’s First Port of Call

Toni Braxton started earning the big bucks when she launched her music career. At the initial stage of her foray into the music industry, she teamed up with her sisters – Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar, all of whom belonged to their church choir as their parents were ministers of God.

Together, the siblings launched what was known as The Braxton Music Group, and they were signed on to the label Arista. After releasing their first and only single, Good Life, Arista was forced to drop The Braxtons since they did not record any success.

While the siblings were exploring the possibility of joining other record labels, Toni’s incredible vocals spoke for the artist. Antonio Reid (L.A) and Kenneth Edmonds (Babyface) became interested in her, and this coincided with the formation of the imprint LaFace records by the duo. Toni eventually joined them in pursuit of her solo career.

With The record label, Toni Braxton experienced unprecedented success; her 1993 debut self-titled studio album sold over 10 million copies on a global scale, hitting #1 on Billboard 200 chart. It earned three Grammies.

The success streak continued with her subsequent albums, 1996’s Secrets, The Heat in 2000, More Than a Woman in 2002, 2005’s Libra, and Pulse in 2010. In 2014, the female vocalist released a duet album called Love, Marriage & Divorce alongside her record label boss Babyface, earning a Grammy in the process. Changing to Def Jam/Universal imprint, Toni dropped Sex & Cigarettes (2018), and under the management of Island Record label, she released Spell My Name in 2020.

Today, Toni is recognized among the highest-selling female R&B musicians in history, with over 70 million records sold on a global scale. She has earned nine Billboard Music Awards, seven Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, and more. We saw her induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2011. Toni Braxton Made Her Broadway Debut in 1998

Recall that Toni was involved in serious financial difficulties that led her to declare bankruptcy a couple of times. It was her bankruptcy experience that led the female R&B artist to decide to try her hands at something totally different.

It was at this point in her career life that Toni turned to Broadway, joining the cast of “Beauty and the Beast” the 1998 Disney production that did a good job of providing her with a more stable source of income.

In the production, Toni replaced Kim Huber as Belle on the 9th of September 1998, marking the first and only time the role was filed by a Black woman. She later left on the 28th of February 1999, and her position was taken by Andrea McArdle

Toni Has Several Other Acting Roles To her Credit

In 1994, she appeared as herself on an episode of the TV series, Roc; her appearance was solely for a concert performance, but it marked her debut on the small screen. She played leading roles in other TV productions, including Mad TV, Blue’s Clues, Fallen Angels Murder Club, Kevin Hal, and more.

Toni’s big screen debut was witnessed in April 2001 as part of the cast of the comedy movie entitled Kingdom Come. Following her movie debut, Toni went on to record appearances in several other commercially successful films, including Play’d: A Hip Hop Story in 2002. That same year, she played The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure. She appeared on the set of Every Day Is Christmas in 2018 and many more.

We are yet to factor in the leading role she played in Braxton Family Values, the popular reality TV show centered on her family members’ lives, including her mum and four sisters. Another of her reality TV shows was Dancing with the Stars, which she did not complete because of health issues.

Toni is a TV Producer

Toni Braxton Has Her Own Beauty Brand

In 2014, the female R&B singer also invested in real estate. She bought a 5,000-square-foot abode in Calabasas, California, for $2.9 million dollars and two years later, in 2016, she sold it for $3 million.

A Look at Some of the Singer’s Past Financial Troubles

Despite all her recorded successes in the entertainment world, Toni has experienced several situations where she had no other choice than to declare bankruptcy. This happened in two different situations.

First Bankruptcy

While the world viewed Toni Braxton as a highly successful musician riding into stardom with her hit singles and albums, the pint-size music powerhouse was actually crashing to new lows. BBC announced in January 1998 that Toni had no choice but to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the fact that she was moving multiple records and selling out world tours notwithstanding.

It later came to the fore that Arista and LaFace Record labels were raking in between $170 and $188 million in sales, but Toni’s contract with them only afforded the music star 33 cents per sale. A scrutiny of her bankruptcy filing revealed that she was neck-deep in debt of $5 million.

The list of the organizations she owed money was revealed as the IRS, AT&T, Tiffany & Co, Neiman Marcus, and many more. She also spent a whopping $2.5 million on things like makeup, hair, and clothing within just a couple of years.

Some tidbits that were released from her attorney in 1997 revealed that Toni Braxton was talking with LaFace in a bid to renegotiate and secure a better deal from the record label company. The new deal in the pipeline would include a higher advance and a royal rate, but despite all her effort, the negotiation was an effort in futility as it fell flat.

Going forward, things really got bad for Toni, and in an interview session with Oprah, the Breath Again hitmaker revealed that the royalty check she got from her album sales was just $1,972 even though she recorded sales of around 30 million records. Toni also disclosed that she was just surviving from the advance she received from the label, including funds generated from some touring.

In a bid to foot her personal bills, Toni Braxton took the hard decision to sell off some of her properties, including clothing, jewelry, cars, and a baby grand piano. When it got really hard, she had to auction off some of her Grammy awards. The situation wasn’t just highly embarrassing for the A-list artist, she also entertained a lot of fear concerning her future in the music industry.

Her Altercation With LaFace Resulted in a Lawsuit

In a bid to come out of Bankruptcy, Toni also decided to file a lawsuit against her record label companies, Arista/LaFace. Her plan was to force them to release her from the alleged $39 million dollar contract she signed with them. The two imprints caught the musician very early in her career life and secured a lucrative deal for her first solo album.

In the beginning, the lawsuit was turning against Toni, however, things took a turn for the better in 1999 when the music star was settled with a huge amount from her imprints. They gave her a condition for the settlement citing “a 10-year gag order barring Toni from speaking publicly about the deal.”

Fans who were really curious to hear about the details of the settlement were disappointed as nothing was forthcoming. It was not until 2017 that Toni Braxton’s memoir revealed that she received over $20 million in that settlement.

With that huge amount, she was able to exit from the record label company in April 2003 and went on to work with other labels like Atlantic, Def Jam, Motown, and Island. Through these imprints, the music superstar was able to drop additional seven successful albums.

She Later Experienced a Second Bankruptcy

The next time that Toni Braxton would experience bankruptcy was in 2010. Perhaps it was the huge settlement she got from her lawsuit against Arista/LaFace that led her to become an extravagant spender. It soon came to the fore that the female vocalist was lavishing funds on refurbishing her home, cars, and other personal items that were not absolutely necessary. This was cited as the major reason she landed into her second bankruptcy.

Just like the first time, filing for her second bankruptcy was very difficult for the singer, but it was something that had to be done as she was left without any alternative. For one, all the efforts she put into working out a mutually acceptable arrangement between her and her major creditors came to naught; she was said to be indebted up to the tune of $10 to $50 million. Besides, meeting up with her personal obligations and making provisions for her children was also becoming impossible, thus, the bankruptcy filing in 2010.

In a bid to bounce back from her second bankruptcy, Toni Braxton dropped the album Pulse in 2010. By 2011, she reunited with the Braxton sisters, and together, they launched the hit We TV reality show entitled Braxton Family Values. The show eventually found its way to the top, earning a spot among the media outlet’s top shows for several years.

Combined with some tours, independent albums, and the success of the Braxton Family Values TV show, Toni Braxton was able to settle all her creditors in 2013 and came out of her bankruptcy. However, she did not go scot-free, as the situation wrought colossal damage to her existing income sources.

It led the singer to lose the right to 27 songs which were part of her greatest hits. This includes You’re Making Me High, Always, How Many Ways, and more. With this development, the singer could no longer receive huge royalties from these tracks, and it becomes so painful when you consider the fact that there were the very songs that shot her into stardom.

The fact remains that Toni has always been a lucky chap from time, and even with all the setbacks in her career life, the musician remained highly sought after as her performances continued to command top dollar. Her personal appearances and live shows alone were raking in between $750,000 and $1 million on a yearly basis.

Is Toni Braxton The richest of The Braxton Sisters?

With her current net worth of $16 million, it is glaring that Toni is the richest among the Braxton sisters. Tamar comes next with a tidy $3 million as her fortune. Trina has stashed away $2 million, and the last two, Towanda and Traci, have $1 million each.
