The popular track which has gained more than a billion views on YouTube and earned her a Grammy nomination is an ode to the place of her birth.

When Camila Cabello was between six and seven years old, her parents decided it was time for them to move to the United States to find better opportunities. She revealed that at first, she made the move together with her mom who could barely speak English.

When the singer asked her mom where they were going to she was told they were only visiting Disneyland. It ended up that they were actually migrating to the United States where they settled in Miami, Florida.  They only had a couple of hundred dollars when they moved to the States and had no family or many clothes. Before the move, her mother made it clear that while she had no idea where they were going, she was not willing to keep living in Cuba.

Camila Cabello’s parents had to separate when the family was moving to the States. The young singer who was approaching 7 at the time, first moved with her mother while her father remained behind in Mexico as he watched them cross the U.S. – Mexico border.

They remained at the border for a long time to know if they would be permitted alongside others to pass or if they would have to return to Cuba to try again another time. They were fortunate to be allowed in, and so they boarded a 36-hour bus that took them to Miami where they settled in the house of her grandfather’s colleague before they found a place of their own.

Alejandro remained separated from his family for a year and a half before he got to make it to the United States where he reunited with his wife and daughter. Camilla revealed that for her father to join them, he literally risked his life crossing the Mexican border.

It was much harder for him than for Camila and her mom, but he could no longer stay away from them, which was why he decided on making the risky move that later changed the lives of all of them. It was in Mexico that her father was born and he has much of his family still there, although he has moved a good number of them to the United States after he moved his immediate family there.

Thanks to her father being from the Country, Camila also holds Mexican Citizenship. As stated, because it was the country of his birth and where he was raised, it was easy for Alejandro to move his family several times during the early childhood of his daughter between Mexico and Cuba.

More so, because her mother is from Cuba, the singer also has Cuban citizenship, which also doubles because it is her place of birth. The singer has come to be more familiar with Cuba as her country when she was a little girl because she spent a better part of her early life in the country.

While her parents have separate nationalities, the singer has three nationalities; she is Cuban, Mexican, and American. As regards the ethnicity of her father and mother, they are also Mexican and traditionally Cuban, respectively. They have ensured that their move to the United States has not robbed their kid of their roots. Cabello revealed that her parents did not only bring to the States some of their family members, but also their music, food, and lifestyle. The singer is proud of her Mexican-Cuban heritage and is disgusted by racists who talk badly about immigrants because the United States was built by immigrants.

They Have Been Very Supportive of Their Daughter

Like every other parent, they have always ensured that their daughter takes her education seriously. She made it known that her mother always told her that while she could lose money and a job, she would always have her education with her.

However, when they realized that she was more interested in music, they still gave her the needed support. When she turned 15, her father agreed to give her a birthday gift by driving her 12 hours to North Carolina where she auditioned for the TV talent competition that would change her life, The X Factor.

She did not succeed at first but later joined other talented contestants Ally Brooke, Normani, Lauren Jauregui, and Dinah Jane to take to the stage as Fifth Harmony. The group went far in the contest before earning a third place finish which was enough to get their career as a group and individually started.

With the support of her parents, Camila recorded some success with her group before she decided to start a solo career in 2016 when she left Fifth Harmony. The singer has always appreciated her parents for all their effort in her career. One significant gesture was during her 2020 Grammy performance when she dedicated her song, First Man to her dad.

Before all these, Alejandro and Sinuhe also made it possible for their daughter to drop out of Miami Palmetto High School where she was in 9th grade to pursue her musical career. However, they ensured that she still got her high school diploma. She promised to go beyond that and obtain a college degree because she came to the United States on family traditions.
