What Is Chris Hemsworth’s Net Worth and Where Does He Live?

Chris Hemsworth is an Australian actor and model who has a net worth of $130 million. This is rather vast amount of wealth for someone whose movie career spans a little less than 20 years.

The actor gained worldwide recognition in 2011 for playing the titular character for the first Thor movie which makes his estimated net worth, 10 years after the movie, even more impressive. On no less than four occasions, Hemsworth has appeared on Forbes’ list ranking of the highest-paid actors and highest-paid celebrities. He made his debut to the ranking in 2014 earning a total of $37 million for a 12 month period.

In his nearly 20-year long career, the actor has been a part of a total of five rather successful movie franchises and a number of blockbuster movies, his most notable one being the Marvel franchise.

Others include; bit parts in the Star Trek franchise (appearing as George Kirk, the father of the movie’s protagonist, in the five-minute prologue of the first movie and small voice role of the aforementioned character in the second movie) and the National Lampoon Vacation franchise; major parts in Snow White and the Huntsman and its subsequent sequel; as well as his major role in the last movie in the Men In Black franchise.

Chris Hemsworth Cut His Teeth In The Small Screen

The Aussie hunk started his career in 2002 when he was just 19 years old, appearing in a number of television shows. Between 2002 and 2004, in the less than two years before landing the role of Kim Hyde in the Australian television series Home and Away, the actor kept his career going with bit parts.

He starred as King Arthur in the fantasy TV series Guinevere Jones for a mere 2 episodes in 2002, he also starred in the television series Neighbours and Marshall Law for an episode each that same year.

In 2003 and 2004, Hemsworth starred in Saddle Club and Fergus McPhail respectively for one episode each. Hemsworth played his role on Home and Away for a total of 189 episodes between 2004 and 2007.

This was his first major small-screen project and to date remains his longest small-screen work as the actor would go on to strike gold in the movie theaters with his numerous roles in acclaimed blockbuster franchises.

Home and Away is a highly successful Australian soap opera that has been running since 1988. Though how much he made in the series has not been disclosed, the actor’s role on the show gained him prominence in the acting scene, and while it did not earn him respect within the film industry, it did expose his talent to a wider audience, as well as filmmakers unlocking the doors to bigger opportunities.

Hemsworth’s Journey to His Blockbuster Years Began With Star Trek

Chris Hemsworth’s first movie role was in 2009 on the first Star Trek movie in the rebooted franchise. The actor played the part of George Kirk (a part first offered to star Matt Damon), father of movie protagonist James T. Kirk, in the movie’s opening scene which served as the movie’s prologue.

The movie was a box office success, making a total of $385.7 million against a budget of $150 million. The actor never disclosed how much he earned for that small role, however, according to The Things, it was the lowest movie paycheck that Chris has ever earned, so much lower than what he earned in the first Thor movie.

We’re not saying it is fair but considering he was relatively unknown to Hollywood at the time and his role was literally a five-minute prologue, the relatively low paycheck sort of makes sense.

Chris Hemsworth starred in two other movies before he landed the role of Thor, first was 2009’s The Perfect Getaway” which achieved modest success, making a whopping $22 million against its $14 million budget but received mixed reviews, the other was 2010’s Ca$h which pretty much bombed, achieving a minuscule of $46,488 against its $7 million budget.

Ca$h, which he co-starred alongside English actor Sean Bean (The one and only Ned Stark), brought Hemsworth the Hollywood exposure and traction he needed to succeed in the industry, so much so that, in 2010, after he booked starring roles in two major motion pictures (Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor and MGM’s Red Dawn), The Hollywood Reporter stated that he had won the ‘Hollywood lottery’ and named him one of the young male actors who are “pushing – or being pushed” onto the Hollywood “A-List”.

With the release of MCU’s Thor and The Avengers, coupled with the success achieved by both movies, Chris Hemsworth was propelled into ultimate stardom.

Marvel Movies Make Up Hemsworth’s Highest Grossing Projects

So far, the most successful movies the actor has appeared in are encompassed in major franchises, specifically the ones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – with this fact, it’s no surprise that the actor is making big bank.

Even though Hemsworth was paid only $150,000 for his first film in the franchise, his paycheck has only grown since then due to the success the franchise has garnered through the years. So much so, that in 2013, Chris Hemsworth earned a total of $58 million which included $37 million he made after the second lone Marvel movie; Thor: The Dark World hit theatres and his earnings from the 2013 movie Rush.

Around this same time, Hemsworth made some acquisitions, including a $44,000 Acura MDX car and his 6,382- square foot Malibu house which he acquired from “Crocodile Dundee” actor Paul Hogan. He appeared in Forbes’ World’s Highest-Paid Actors list in 2014 and 2015 – closing with a total of $27 million, a little less than the year before but that was due to Black Hat and In The Heart of The Sea bombing at the Box Office.

Hemsworth was named the 11th highest-paid actor in Hollywood by Forbes in 2017, raking in a total of $31.5 million that year. The actor ranked 31st in Forbes’ list of Highest-Paid Celebrities in 2018 – with a total of $64.5 million (doubling his wealth from the previous year) – he ranked 24th on the same list in 2019.

Variety reported, that in the summer of 2019, Hemsworth pulled off a rare thing in Hollywood: back-to-back blockbusters. That year, the actor pulled in a total of $76.4 million, a number which includes pay for the three movies he appeared in that year, as well as residuals from previous films.

It seems this actor will continue to make bank within and outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it has been reported that he will be paid a massive $20 million for appearing in his fourth solo film in the franchise; Thor: Love & Thunder, slated to be released on the 6th of May 2022.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe series is the highest-grossing film franchise Hemsworth has starred in all through his career, it’s also, incidentally, the highest-grossing film franchise with a total worldwide box office revenue of $22.93 billion as of August 2021 with the Thor franchise alone making a total of $1,947,875,146.

The actor’s starting salary for the franchise was, as mentioned before, a mere $150,000 but this quickly grew (with him receiving; $2 million – $3 million for the first Avengers movie; $5.4 million for Avengers: Age of Ultron; $37 million for Thor: The Dark World; $15 million for Thor: Ragnarok; and $15 million each for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame respectively) over the years as the franchise got more traction and a much larger fan base.

Hemsworth now boasts a salary of between $15 million and $20 million, including back-end points, an almost impossible fit for an actor whose career spans a little less than twenty years and we love to see it.

Outside the MCU, the second highest-grossing film franchise the actor has been a part of is Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman which made a total of $396 million against its budget of $170 million. Hemsworth took home a paycheck of $5 million in 2012 for his portrayal of the Huntsman, although the subsequent sequel is not considered a box office bomb, only garnering a total of $165 million against a budget of $115 million, the actor still made bank with a rather sufficient pay raise, a massive $10 million dollars (double his salary for the first movie.

Men in Black: International comes in last on the list, grossing a total worldwide box office revenue of $253.9 million against a budget of $110 million. The movie was a bit of a flop at the box office when compared to the other three movies in the franchise which collectively raked in over $1 billion ($589.4 million for Men In Black; $441 million for Men In Black 2 and $624 million for Men In Black 3). It’s not public knowledge how much Hemsworth made for his role in the franchise but what we do know is that the actor closed the year 2019 with a total of $76. 4 million which is rather impressive.

Although his most bankable roles in the industry see him playing an action hero on different levels, his abs aren’t the only thing he’s flexing, the actor also flexes his acting muscles time and time again, taking a number of diverse roles that cut across the various movie genre. We saw him show off his knack for comedic timing in 2015’s National Lampoon Vacation, in Thor: Ragnarok, and his subsequent Marvel movies thereafter.

Aside from his acting career, Hemsworth is also a brand ambassador for TAG Heuer Swiss Luxury Watches. According to Ethos Watches, Chris Hemsworth has been associated with TAG Heuer since his portrayal of Formula One driver James Hunt in Ron Howard’s 2013 film Rush, which was centered around the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda. The brand is associated with the film, owing to its motorsport DNA. By extension, a relationship between Hemsworth and the brand was forged. The brand made him an official ambassador in 2015 and he has been working with them ever since.

The actor is also associated with the German Luxury fashion house, Hugo Boss, and earlier in 2021, he was made the international face for its worldwide fashion campaigns. This makes the actor Boss’s first global brand ambassador. Esquire Middle East wrote that the Marvel-universe actor is no stranger to the collaborations with the fashion brand, having been a central part of the Boss Bottled fragrance’s marketing since 2017.

Hemsworth ‘exemplifies a balanced lifestyle.’ The brand also added that the expansion of the previous collaborations with the Thor actor provides a globally consistent Boss brand image that will connect various product lines. Though the numbers have not been confirmed, the actor is said to be raking in seven-figure endorsement deals from both brands.

Thematic Entertainment and Centr Are Some of Hemsworth’s Businesses

With all the money Hemsworth raked in from the industry, the actor has made steps to carving a niche for himself in the business world with Thematic Entertainment and the Centr app.

In 2018, Chris Hemsworth followed in the footsteps of fellow Australian star Margot Robbie and launched his own production company; Thematic Entertainment, a Melbourne and Los Angeles-based production company with Australian producers John Finemore and James Hoppe.

The company seems to be doing well for itself, with its most notable work being, Netflix’s Extraction which was produced by the company and starred Hemsworth himself. It is not reported how much the film made but the film is said to be the biggest hit on Netflix ever, earning the actor over $5 million for starring. It seems to have done well enough because its sequel is slated to come out on Netflix in the latter part of 2022.

Among its upcoming projects, according to IMDB, is director Eva Sørhaug’s crime thriller Sunny, which will star Sharon Stone as a drug kingpin, mob mistress, and devoted single mother who has 24 hours to get out of town before the local mob boss discovers her dysfunctional family’s devastating secret; and the Peter Atencio directed action-comedy is said to star Hemsworth and Tiffany Haddish, so… fingers crossed!

The Aussie actor also launched his own health and fitness app; Centr, by Chris Hemsworth, in February 2019. As the app’s tagline goes; Train, Eat and Live better with Chris Hemsworth’s team, the actor’s app simply creates a space where individuals can interact with professional chefs, trainers and well-being experts focused on helping the individual achieve their ideal health and fitness goal.

It is a subscription-based app that offers lots of nutrition, exercise, and wellness routines to its clients. It’s hard to say how much the app is worth since that information is not public knowledge but based on the positive reviews it has received, it seems to be doing pretty well.

According to House & Home, the Thor star and his wife originally purchased the 6,800-square-foot home from another Australian actor, Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan in 2013. The secluded estate is located in Malibu‘s coveted Point Dume neighborhood and is described in its listing as a marriage of classic Victorian elegance and modern European sensibility.

The mini-mansion, at the time, was purchased at a massive $4.8 million, the couple officially moved their family to his native Australia in 2016, leaving behind a stunning Malibu mini-mansion on the market for a cool $6.5 million. The mansion recently sold for closer to $5.25 million.

Among some of the features of the house are a large gym room as well as a game room. The 5 bedroom and 6 bathroom mansion also include a decent guesthouse where Chris’s brothers probably stayed whenever they were visiting.

A Beautiful Malibu Beach House

The actor along with his brothers reportedly paid $3.45 million for the four-bedroom beach home back in 2016. The beachside property is located in Malibu, a popular location among celebrities, which likely appealed to the three siblings with its emphasis on privacy and easy access to the beach. The siblings bought the sleek 4,612-square-foot estate roughly four years ago and used it for family residence while they were filming in nearby Los Angeles.

According to Fancy Pants Homes, the modern yet family-friendly Malibu home has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and tons of nice features. With polished concrete floors and warm wood accents, floor-to-ceiling windows, sliders, and just a touch of steampunk elements, the 4,612-square-foot home is a beautiful piece of modern architecture. However, The Hemsworth brothers have left their pristine California hideaway, the four-bedroom home with ocean and mountain views sold for $4.25 million early in 2021, after being listed back in September 2020 with a $4.9 million asking price.

The Actor Now Lives In A Renovated Mansion in Byron Bay

The actor and his wife Elsa Pataky purchased this 4.2-hectare property for a whopping $7. 2 million in 2014. This property is located just outside the beachside town of Byron Bay in New South Wales, and consists of six separate buildings, and features a swimming pool. The couple lived in the original eight-room Balinese-style home before deciding to knock it down and rebuild.

A development application was first lodged with Byron Shire Council in late 2016 and approved in March 2017. Renovations were only completed in January of 2021 and the property is now rumored to cost around $18 million. The beachside mansion is now worth an estimated $30 million. The six-bedroom home includes a gym, steam room, media room, games room, and vast outdoor living and play areas; it also has its own two-lane 10-pin bowling alley.

Yes, Chris Hemsworth is the richest Hemsworth brother, but that is not to say the Liam and Luke Hemsworth are not well off themselves. While they’ve all achieved remarkable acting success, Chris Hemsworth is unarguably the richest of the three Hemsworth brothers.

Liam Hemsworth – Net Worth: $30 Million

Chris’ net worth is more than four times that of Liam Hemsworth, who is around $30 million rich. Miley Cyrus’s ex-husband, born in 1990, is the youngest of the Hemsworth brothers, and the next popular after Chris. Like his brother Chris, he began his career on the small screen – he was part of the cast of the soap opera Neighbors.

Liam was the first one to get called to test for the lead role in Thor, he had moved to the United States for that, however, he did not get the role as it eventually went to his younger brother Chris. Liam has a handful of blockbuster films to his credit, most notably The Hunger Games film series which grossed over $2.97 billion worldwide against a budget of $495 million, making it the 21st-highest-grossing film franchise of all time. His other TV gigs include Tangle and Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms.

Luke also has a couple of big-screen credits – he appeared in Thor: Ragnarok in a cameo role.
