Though she wanted to move out of Emalahleni to be independent after her internship, she met and fell in love with Khaya Sokhulu (Zamani Mbatha) while working at a factory. Their relationship faced serious challenges as Nandi’s father, Frans Mkhize (Siphiwe Nkosi), was against her choice of man after finding out that Khaya was the sex worker at The Black Door brothel, with whom he was romantically involved.
Khaya’s family also wanted him to marry his late brother’s wife, Nolitha (Sibulele Ntlebi), after she revealed that Khaya was the father of her child. Upon hearing the news of his brother’s demise and how he was forcefully enrolled as a sex worker to clear his brother’s debt to the brothel’s owner, Mam Rebecca (Linda Sebezo), Khaya Sokhulu was overwhelmed by emotions, which made him get drunk.
Nolitha then saw an opportunity to seduce him and later fell pregnant for him. Though she affirmed to have aborted the pregnancy before moving back home to Eastern Cape, she returned to the Sokhulu family with a baby bump, citing Khaya as her baby daddy. The turn of events caused a rift between Khaya and the love of his life, Nandi, but they later patched things up.

In the final episodes of The Black Door, Nandi ends up marrying her boyfriend, Khaya Sokhulu, but he doesn’t marry only her. On the same day, Khaya tied the knot with both Nandi and Nolitha. Following Nandi and Khaya’s on-screen chemistry, the two were nominated for Royalty Soapie Award for Outstanding Couple.
