South Africa has a very robust Newspaper and magazine industry with analysts estimating about 280 locally published titles available; it is also estimated that the industry’s annual turnover in 1998 was about R 1.7 billion, this gives you an idea of how huge this industry is. The present newspaper industry in South Africa is in a relatively healthy state. According to a South African Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) survey in 1996, there were 36 daily and weekly urban newspapers in South Africa — 29 in English, four in Afrikaans, two in Zulu and one in Xhosa.
Just recently in 2013, it was discovered that there are 22 daily and 25 weekly major urban newspapers in South Africa, it was also discovered that most of these South African newspapers are published in English with about 400 regional and community newspapers mostly delivered free of charge, there are also a wide range of general and specialized news websites in South Africa that are of international standard on a par with their counterparts in Europe and United States.
According to the South African Advertising Research Foundation’s All Media Products Survey (Amps) 2012, about 10.5-million, South Africans read the urban dailies, with around 17.5-million people – or 50% of South Africans over the age of 15 – reading newspapers. In this article, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the lesser known but established Newspapers in South Africa, we initially published an article on Newspapers in SA for current South African News
