The appointment of Mr Fraser as the new State Security boss takes effect today, 26 September 2016.
In a media statement, the Ministry of State Security disclosed that the appointment is in line with the postulation of the constitution and relevant legislation.
Fraser isn’t a newbie to the intelligence community. He has served in various operational capacities. He was once the DEG Operations in the former National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Again, he served as a DDG in the Department of Home Affairs responsible for Immigration Services.
The Ministry of State Security referred to his previous positions and asserted that Mr Fraser will help move the organisation forward.
“He brings with him immense understanding and knowledge of the intelligence environment and his astute managerial experience,” said the Ministry.
Similarly, Minister Mahlobo who announce the appointment said he has full confidence in Fraser’s abilities.
“We believe Mr Fraser is equal to the task and will provide the necessary leadership that will ensure the Agency is able to deliver on its constitutional and legal mandate of upholding national security,” remarked Mahlobo.
The Minister added that Fraser appreciated the confidence shown in him. And, has expressed commitment to work with the Ministry and the entire membership of the Agency to deliver on the mandate.
Mr Zuma also paid tribute to struggle icon Winne Madikizela-Mandela who turned 80 today.
He said Winne’s resilience and tenacity of spirit in the face of this most brutal onslaught of her people during the apartheid regime will always remind South Africans that the nation’s freedom came with a price.
“Thank you for remaining unwavering in standing with the poor and downtrodden at all times. We are grateful for the gift of your life. We wish you a happy, warm and enjoyable birthday today. May you have many more and continue to serve as an inspiration to the whole nation, especially the youth,” President Zuma added.
