The South African Rand has been the topic of many recent discussions for all the wrong reasons. In a nutshell, it is widely predicted that the rand will further experience a downward slide against the dollar if the political tension in South Africa fails to calm off.<\/p>\n
Anyway, let’s ignore the much anticipated ill fate of the currency and look at the few things a lot of people don\u2019t know about the South African Rand.<\/p>\n
1. The South African Rand came into existence in 1961;<\/p>\n
2. The South African Rand (R) is available in banknotes of R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10.<\/p>\n
3. The ISO code of the South African Rand is \u201cZAR\u201d, which is an acronym for Dutch words \u201cZuid-Afrikaanse Rand\u201d.<\/p>\n
4. The South African Rand is used by the Common Monetary Area, consisting of four countries (South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia).<\/p>\n
5. The South African Rand had a higher value against the US dollar from 1961 \u2013 1982.<\/p>\n
6. In 1961, the first series of the South African Rand was in denominations of R1, R2, R10 and R20.<\/p>\n
7. The South African Rand was first printed in two variants, one with English writing and the other with Afrikaans writing.<\/p>\n
8. In the 1990s, the South African Rand got a new look\u00a0with images of the Big Five wildlife species.<\/p>\n
9. In 2005 the rand had some additional security features (colour-shifting ink on the R50 and higher pattern of symbols) introduced.<\/p>\n
