She then had her career breakthrough when she performed on Gwynneth Ashley Robin&#8217;s show and was asked to record a single, &#8216;Ek Verlang Na Jou&#8217;. The song was a critical and commercial success and certified gold by the Recording Industry of South Africa, having sold more than 25,000 copies.<\/p>\n<p>After encountering overnight success with her first Afrikaans single, &#8216;Ek Verlang Na Jou&#8217;, Sonja Herholdt moved on to release several other singles and albums. She now has over 34 albums to her name, and amazingly, 11 of them <a href=\"https:\/\/gimacademy.africa\/courses_info_nl?cid=226\">gained<\/a> gold certification from RiSA. In 1995, Herholdt signed with BMG Records, and her compilation album, &#8216;Skipskop&#8217; was a huge success.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, her 1998 album, &#8216;Ritsel in die Rietbos&#8217; flopped commercially but the singer-songwriter made a rebound with her album, &#8216;Reconstructing Alice,&#8217; released in 2000. She established her own record label called Son Music in the year 2002.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"auto\"><strong>Sonja Herholdt&#8217;s Awards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From 1976 to 1986, Sonja Herholdt released more than ten albums. They include &#8216;Sonja&#8217; (1976), &#8216;Waterblommetjies&#8217; (1978), Harlekyn (1979), &#8216;Waarom Daarom&#8217; (1981), &#8216;Liefdesling&#8217; (1984), and &#8216;Lofsang &#8211; Sonja Herhodt en Jan de Wet&#8217; (1985). Interestingly, Sonja was invited to perform on Dutch TV as she recorded tremendous success in Europe, too. Their first child, Claudia, was born in 1982, followed by the birth of Simeon in 1985. While Jesse arrived in 1987, the former couple&#8217;s last child, Timothy, was born in 1991. Sadly, two years after Timothy&#8217;s birth, he had a hearing impairment.<\/p>\n<p>This prompted Sonja Herholdt to open a school for Afrikaans children with hearing impairment. The school is located in Bryanston Primary School&#8217;s pre-primary section. While some of Sonja&#8217;s children keep a low profile, her son, Simeon, followed in her footsteps and is a well-known Afrikaner singer, songwriter, and actor.
