We constantly hear of hijackings, rape, armed robberies, ATM bombings, domestic violence, and murder just to mention a few.<\/p>\n<p>It is also unfortunate to note that serial murders are not new to this country. In fact, South Africa\u00a0has the second-highest number of serial killers in the world. In this list, we\u2019ll take a closer look at 12 of the most insane ruthless serial killers who have murdered countless South Africans over the last century.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.\u00a0Moses Sithole<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BXI3Bztg0gA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. Moses Sithole (born 17 November 1964)\u00a0also known as the \u201cABC Killer\u201d or \u201cThe South African Strangler\u201d has come to be widely known as South Africa\u2019s most evil serial killer. Sithole\u00a0committed 38 murders\u00a0and raped 40 women in 1995.\u00a0To the people around him, Sithole appeared to be a mild-mannered individual. At the time of his crimes, he was managing a shell organisation,\u00a0&#8220;Youth Against Human Abuse&#8221;, ostensibly devoted to the eradication of child abuse. All of his victims were females interviewing for positions with Sithole&#8217;s ersatz charity.\u00a0Moses Sithole carried out his killings\u00a0(popularly called the ABC Murders)\u00a0in Atteridgeville, Boksburg and Cleveland between 1994 to 1995. He was able to bait his women victims by offering them jobs at a children&#8217;s home in Benoni. Moses would later strangle them with either his belt or underwear.\u00a0Even worse is the fact that Moses Sithole is HIV positive. He provided\u00a0this information during questioning. On 5 December 1997, Sithole was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment for each of the 38 murders, 12 years&#8217; imprisonment for each of the 40 rapes, and five years&#8217; imprisonment for each of the six robberies.\u00a0He ended up receiving a total of\u00a02,410 years behind bars\u00a0after an extended trial that took more than a year to complete. Jack Mogale\u2019s last crime was the brutal beating and repeated raping of a young teenage girl. Mogale left her for dead after committing this despicable act on her. For two years, Jack Madumetsa\u00a0Mogale strangled 11 of his victims using panties, clothing and handbag straps. There were times when he subdued victims by beating them with bricks or a sharp object and then strangling them with his bare hands. He was eventually arrested in March 2009.\u00a0During his trial, Jack Mogale sat smiling, grinning, and even laughed out loud.\u00a0Mogale\u00a0faced 61 counts of rape, murder, kidnapping and attempted murder. He\u00a0was sentenced to\u00a016 life sentences.\u00a0He was also sentenced without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Elifasi Msomi was hanged in Pretoria in January 1956 after being convicted of hacking 15 people to death. Msomi blamed his victims&#8217; deaths on the &#8220;tokoloshe&#8221; an elf-like demon<b>\u00a0<\/b>which, he said, would appear on his shoulder and order him to kill. Known as the \u201cMonster of Tholeni,\u201d Bulelani Mabhayi stalked his victims in a rural area of the Eastern Cape. In doing this, he would make sure that he targeted women who had no male partners to protect or help them.\u00a0Between 2007 and 2012, the community of Tholeni lived in fear because there was a predator living among them. \u201cMr Mabhayi, you are definitely not a person that society needs\u2026 It\u2019s not clear how you were able to escape capture for such a long time.\u201d said the judge on his trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was well known and liked by people of that community. He took an unfair advantage of his knowledge of the homes he worked for. The deceased were attacked in the sanctuary of their homes where they expect to be safe\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf what the social worker said is true, he doesn\u2019t seem to realize the enormity of his actions. In fact, he agreed that had he not been caught, he would have continued with his crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Mabhayi was given 25 life terms without the possibility of parole, as the sentence was handed down to him by the judge, Mabhayi remained silent avoiding eye contact with the families and relatives of his victims that were sitting in the public gallery.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Christopher Mhlengwa Zikode<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1659\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/zidoke.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1659\" src=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/zidoke.jpg\" alt=\"zidoke - south african serial killers\" width=\"1024\" height=\"813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/zidoke.jpg 632w, https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/zidoke-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South African Serial Killers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cDonnybrook Serial Killer\u201d, Zidoke committed 18 murders between 1994 and 1995\u00a0in the KwaZulu-Natal province, before justice finally caught up to him.\u00a0Zikode would force his way into a family home and kill all the men inside before raping the women. He also had no issues shooting the women who protested strongly against being raped, then having sex with their corpses. Raping children was also part of his activities. He\u00a0committed five of the offences he was convicted of after he was released on R300 bail in August 1995.\u00a0He was eventually re-arrested and convicted of his crimes in September 1997 and\u00a0received five life sentences.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Sipho Thwala<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PEQoSE1IVL4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cPhoenix Strangler\u2019\u2019\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(born 1968) is a South African rapist and serial killer who was convicted in 1999 for the murders of 16 women and 10 rapes and was sentenced to 506 years in prison.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The killer apparently lured his victims to the sugarcane fields of Mount Edgecombe, near Phoenix.\u00a0He raped then strangled his victims with their underwear before burying them in shallow graves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Cedric Maake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t0q_oV1W7kI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cWemmer Pan Killer\u201d who committed 27 murders between 1996 and 1997. Cedric Maake is one of the worst serial killers in South Africa\u2019s history, Cedric Maake murdered 27 people and raped 14.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maake was arrested in December 1997. On September 6, 2000, he was convicted of 27 murders, 26 attempted murde<\/span>rs, 14 rapes, 41 aggravated robberies and so many less serious offenses\u2014133 charges in all. He was sentenced to 1,340 years in prison. He was\u00a0described as a \u201cunique serial killer\u201d. Unlike other serial murderers, he did not fixate on one type of victim or method and his motives remain a mystery. Maake maintained his innocence throughout\u00a0the trial, claiming that there was a conspiracy against him. He is currently serving a 1340-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8. David Randitsheni<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5eh1D4Tx_1c?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cModimolle serial killer&#8221; he committed 10 murders between 2004 and 2008. David Randitsheni was a serial rapist and killer that was also convicted of 17 rapes in addition to 10 murders in 2009. Most of his crimes involved children although details of his crimes were not made available, out of respect for the children\u2019s families.\u00a0He was sentenced to 16 life terms and 220 years in prison. He can only be eligible for parole after serving at least 35 years in prison. He committed suicide in 2009.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>9. Jimmy Maketta<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1657\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1657\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jesus_killer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1657\" src=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jesus_killer.jpg\" alt=\"jesus_killer\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jesus_killer.jpg 632w, https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jesus_killer-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South African Serial Killers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cJesus Killer\u201d, Jimmy Maketta committed 16 murders between April to December 2005.\u00a0A state psychologist described him as a psychopath.\u00a0Maketta described how he would watch farm labourers from a hill on Friday evenings near the township of Philippi, Cape Town. From there he would select drunken victim that he attacked mostly at night during his nine-month reign of terror between April and December 2005. He was convicted on 16 counts of murder, 19 counts of rape and was sentenced to life in prison<\/p>\n<h2><strong>10. Stewart Wilken also known as the \u201cBoetie Boer\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1658\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wilkin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1658\" src=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wilkin.jpg\" alt=\"wilkin\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wilkin.jpg 632w, https:\/\/buzzsouthafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wilkin-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South African Serial Killers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is another unique serial killer, what makes him a particularly interesting case is that he chose two types of victims:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crimelibrary.com\/serial_killers\/predators\/stewart_wilken\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">female prostitutes and young boys<\/a>. For eight good years, between 1990 to 1997, eight murders had the seaside city of Port Elizabeth on edge. Unfortunately, the local community (and the police) couldn&#8217;t connect the dots until a 12-year-old boy by the name of Henry Bakers disappeared on January 22, 1997. Police arrested Wilken on January 28 but let him go after Wilken provided them with a believable alibi. Wilken was arrested again three days later after his alibi turned out to be false.<\/p>\n<p>Wilken\u2019s later confession revealed disturbing details of his crimes. He told the police that he \u201cinspected\u201d his daughter\u2019s vagina and found that she had been \u201cdefiled.\u201d He told her he wanted to save her from \u201cthis life\u201d and then strangled her. He kept her body (and later her skeleton) hidden behind the Garden Court Holiday Inn hotel for six months. The skeleton was found in 1996, but the police could only now attach an identity to it. Wilken confessed to murdering\u00a0at least 10 victims, including his own daughter and Henry Bakers. He was sentenced to seven life terms behind bars. He is considered to be a ruthless killer that is beyond rehabilitation, he\u00a0even masturbated in the court bathroom during his trial.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>11. Elias Xitavhudzi, also known as the \u201cPangaman\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Elias murdered 16 people in the 60&#8217;s.\u00a0His modus operandi was: Targeting only white females in a strictly-segregated community, his killing spree caused a sensation locally.<span style=\"color: #4d4d4d;\">\u00a0<\/span>Elias Xitavhudzi was the Pangaman that stalked Atteridgeville in Pretoria in the 1960s. He was hanged after his trial.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>12. Petrus Madiba<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F5D-l-imBuQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is sad to see that this man shares his last name with the nickname Nelson Mandela is so fondly called.
