She first hit a light pole before colliding with a tree, and the car overturned, leaving Sbahle trapped in it.
After the accident occurred around 4 AM, Sbahle Mpisane’s car burst into flames, and Brian Dube – a fitness trainer from Durban, who lived close to the accident scene, rushed to the scene with a fire extinguisher and quenched the fire. At first, Dube thought that the driver was dead as the car was wrecked mostly on the driver’s side. But after seeing Sbahle Mpisane move her arm, he alerted the police to call an ambulance.
And when Rescue Care Paramedics arrived, they noticed that the driver had sustained critical injuries, and what caused the accident was unclear. They had to use the Jaws of Life to get her out of the car. Sbahle had internal bleeding and remained on life support for some time. She spent three weeks in a coma and then several months in ICU.
The accident shattered almost 80% of the bones in her body, but thankfully her spine was intact. After the crash, Sbahle Mpisane was like a toasted slice of bread that was crumpled up. Her nose was completely broken, her eyes hung out, and then her arms, hands, left knee, ankle, and toes were all broken. Also, her right foot was severely shattered from her hip, thigh, knee, foot, and toe, and her ankle bone was completely removed from the foot.
With Sbahle Mpisane’s stepmom knowing how shattered she would be if she woke up with only one leg, she pleaded with the doctors to do miracles to get her right leg together. The doctors then managed to put all the pieces back together, but as the accident left Sbahle’s brain visible, she suffered from amnesia. For two years, she had no memory of anything, including the accident. Hence, she visited the accident scene several times to have a recollection of what happened.

After her accident in August 2018, Sbahle Mpisane was confined to a wheelchair. She was unable to work for a long time until July 2019, when she took her first steps on her own. She had been attempting to take at least one step on her own for a couple of months without much success. Eventually, she managed to take three steps, and it took her one hour to achieve that.
Sbahle chronicles her recovery process on Instagram as she aims to use it to motivate many people passing through the same circumstances. In August 2019, the fitness fanatic walked her first 200 meters. The next month, she walked the runway in a wheelchair for the House of St. Luke at the Durban Fashion Fair held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

Soon after Sbahle Mpisane was rescued from her wrecked car by Paramedics, a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened against her at Durban Central police station. It was unclear what caused the accident as the cameras in the avenue were not working at the time. Hence, the circumstances around the incident were investigated.
However, in April 2019, the charges were dropped by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The docket was sent to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision, and the NPA decided not to prosecute Sbahle Mpisane due to insufficient evidence.
