Reports have it that some white students splashed a black women security guard’s face with urine.
The incident reportedly happened at the exit of the University of the Free State Bloemfontein campus.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Free State frowned at the incident saying it’s a racist attack.
Referring to the White students as barbarians and bigots, COSATU remarked that they were shocked by the incident.
“COSATU Free State has learned with shock about the incident. A black woman security guard was splashed with urine in the face by some white students at the exit of the UFS Bloemfontein campus.
We share the pain, humiliation and embarrassment which the poor worker may have felt when this incident took place. We condemn these white barbarians and bigots who have attacked and humiliated this worker in such a sordid fashion,” stated the Congress.
Thereafter, it added that it cannot continue to allow “our daughters, sisters, wives and mothers” to be continuously humiliated in such manner while doing their jobs.
COSATU emphasized that what the black female security guard suffered was both “a racist and a patriarchal attack.”
Thus, it called on “white people and males in the province” to reject the attack “and make it clear that it was not done in their name.”
Also, COSATU called on the University of the Free State to act decisively on the issue.
“These perpetrators should be brought to book and the institution should further guarantee the safety of women black workers in the institution,” COSATU urged.
It however, divulged that it would be engaging its structures to determine the appropriate action to take.
That, to COSATU, will highlight their disquiet on the matter.
