Beyoncé’s Grammy performance at the 59th annual awards ceremony had everyone in high spirits.
The expecting mother of twins made her debut performance and public appearance since the big news on Sunday with a New Age celebration of women at the Grammy Awards.
The American pop singer who leads the night’s nominations set the internet ablaze earlier this month with news that she is pregnant.
Beyoncé surprised everyone as she threw caution to the wind and put on an extravagant and abstract performance, channelling Indian spirituality and ancient Egypt. Her heavy bump didn’t deter her at all.
Beyoncé was introduced by her mother before an image of the 35-year-old superstar with her baby bump openly visible under her bra, flashed on the screen. She was also shown with her mother and daughter Blue Ivy, all in gold.
The real Beyoncé then appeared donning a golden crown and flowing cape alongside dozens of female dancers, who made formations around her as they turned the stage into a sea of flowers.
“Do you remember being born? Are you thankful for the hips that cracked? The deep velvet of your mother, of her mother and of her mother?” she said during the opening of her performance. “You look nothing like your mother. You look everything like your mother. You desperately want to look like her. How to wear your mother’s lipstick. You must wear it like she wears disappointment on her face. Your mother is a woman, and women like her cannot be contained.”
Beyoncé sang two songs from her latest album, Love Drought and Sandcastles. Her performance was however highlighted with spoken word incantations on women and their power.
“If we are going to heal, let it be glorious,” Beyoncé said.
Beyoncé’s Grammy performance ended with the singer stealing a glance towards her husband and rapper, Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy.
