Te Hinekāhu is 11 Years Old

Te Hinekāhu is 11 years old. She was born Te Kāinga O Te Hinekāhu Waititi on May 20, 2012, in Los Angeles, California. She is the oldest daughter of New Zealand filmmaker, actor, and comedian Taika David Cohen (popularly known as Taika Waititi) with his ex-wife, film producer Chelsea Winstanley.

Although she was born in the United States, Te’s dad revealed during an interview that they decided against conforming to the American tendency of a lot of medical intervention during birth and had found a birthing center with New Zealand-related facilities. We deduced from his words that the actress, who weighed a healthy 3.4 kg at birth, was born in a cool place with natural New Zealand styles.

Te Hinekāhu is an American citizen by birth but also a citizen of New Zealand through her parents, her father in particular. Her ancestral and ethnic lineage could be traced back to the Māori people of New Zealand.

Te Hinekāhu’s Mother Is Chelsea Winstanley

The woman who bore the responsibility of bringing Te Hinekāhu into this world through a process of natural birth is none other than Chelsea Winstanley. If that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because she is a fairly popular figure in Hollywood, not just because of her prior association with her firstborn daughter’s father but also because of her active involvement in the American movie industry.

Born Chelsea Jane Winstanley on January 30, 1976, Te’s mother is a film producer best known for several documentaries and short films – to her credit. Some of her works include How Mum Decolonised the Screen, Te Whakarauora Tangata, Ebony Society, Meathead, Night Shift, Sonny, My Older Brother, Waru, Sech’el, Little King, Forgive Me, What We Do in the Shadows, and the Oscar-winning film, Jojo Rabbit.

Aside from producing and directing, Te’s mother also serves as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ production branch and was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Te Hinekāhu Parents were Married For Nearly a Decade

Taika Waititi and Chelsea Winstanley, Te’s parents, first met after she interviewed him for a television documentary series on Maori artists. The details of their early days as a couple have taken a back seat to other events that occurred later during their time as a married couple, but we can confirm that the interview set the tone for a romantic relationship that eventually culminated in a wedding ceremony that happened in 2011, in New York City.

The marriage lasted for over seven years, with the former couple filing for legal separation in 2018 before finalizing the divorce in 2020. Following the divorce, Te’s parents got shared custody, and she spent her time between them.

It would appear that the New Zealand filmmaker got primary custody of their children. However, without the custody arrangements’ details, we have no way of verifying this information.

Te Hinekāhu Has a Younger Sister and an Older Half-Brother

During their time as a married couple, Te Hinekāhu’s parents had another daughter besides her. Te’s younger sister, Matewa Kiritapu Waititi, was born on August 11, 2015, more than three years after Te was born.

Additionally, the Jojo-Rabbit film producer came into her marriage with Te’s father with a son named Maia, whom she had when she was 20 years old and raised as a single mother.

Te Hinekāhu

Te Hinekāhu’s sister, Matewa, is currently 8 years old and is also an actress as she shared screen time with Te as one of the abducted Asgardian children in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Not much is known about her older maternal sibling, but basing our findings on the fact that Te’s mother had him when she was 20 years old, we can confirm that he was born in 1996, and although the exact details of his birth are unknown at the moment, we can presume that he is currently 28 years old.

Te Hinekāhu Has Picked Up Some Acting Roles

Given her solid, long-lived Hollywood legacy, it’s no surprise that Te Hinekāhu has joined the movie business. Her childhood experiences have been gleaned from watching her parents carry out their responsibilities in the American entertainment sector.

Her first real experience as a child actress came in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). The American superhero film based on Marvel Comics, which also featured the character Thor, sees Te portray the role of one of the several Asgardian kids who were abducted by the god-killer, Gorr (as portrayed by Christian Bale).

At the time of writing, her involvement in the hugely acclaimed fourth installment in the Thor film series remains her sole acting credit. One would suspect that it would not be her last, at least not with the support and assistance she is bound to receive from her parents and their colleagues, and also as a result of her clear acting abilities.

She Has a Good Relationship With Her Father

During an interview in 2020, Taika Waititi, Te’s dad, provided insight into his relationship with her. He started by pointing out how blessed her birth was to him. He further revealed that she had been named after his grandmother.

Te spent the majority of the pandemic year with her father and sister. That time of isolation allowed her to bond better with him, and that bond has remained pretty much unshakeable. He encouraged her and her sister’s interest in filmmaking by allowing them to regularly visit him on set to get the hang of how movies are made.

As previously mentioned, it would be shocking for him not to fully back her decision to go into movie-making full-time when she is done with her education. Also, in the highly improbable scenario that Te decides to go another way career-wise, you can bet a lot of money on the fact that her father will support her. He loves her that much.
