He was born on July 9, 1962, in The Bronx, New York City, United States. Before he became a stockbroker, Carter’s father worked as a door-to-door meat and seafood salesman on Long Island, New York.

After the meat vendor business had failed and shut down, a family friend of his who was concerned about his welfare helped him to secure a job at L.F Rothschild as a trainee stockbroker. The company later shut down as a result of financial challenges it had faced in relation to the Black Monday stock market crash in 1987.

Carter Belfort’s father would then start up a financial firm known as Stratton Oakmont, a brokerage house. His firm was excelling and he began making giant strides in his career. It was during this time that he used the company to commit financial crimes.

Stratton Oakmont served as a boiler room where penny stocks are marketed and then investors were defrauded with “pump and dump” stock sales. In 1999, Jordan Belfort and his associate, Danny Porush were convicted of securities fraud and money laundering activities and were sentenced to serve a four-year jail term of which Jordan Belfort served 22 months at the Taft Correctional Institution in Taft, California. This was in exchange for a plea deal with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation).

The court had given an order for Carter’s father to pay $110.4 million been payment for the money he illegally obtained from numerous stock buyers.

Before his marriage to Nadine Caridi, Carter Belfort’s mother, Jordan Belfort was first married to Denise Lombardo whom he later divorced. Nadine Caridi is a British-born model who was raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, United States.

Carter’s parents met at a party through a mutual friend Alan Wilzig and there they became friends.
