Is Brittney Griner Trans?

Brittney Griner is not trans. The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star has been called into question on many occasions because of her much flaunted unusual physique. Griner’s imposing physique compares more favorably to a male athlete than to a female’s.

While it is not unheard of for female basketball players to be over 6ft tall, Brittney’s height of 6ft 9inches also dwarfs a respectable number of basketball stars, male or female. As If all the aforementioned physical traits are not unsettling enough, Griner’s wingspan of 88 inches is a figure that is almost improbable in female athletes, Griner herself being the as yet only known exception to this improbability.

Griner’s gender identity was an issue that left many at their wits’ end while trying to figure it out until the basketball star came out as a lesbian in an interview that happened almost a decade ago on February 11, 2013. During the interview, Brittney debunked the rumors that pegged her as transgender and instead identified as a lesbian female. She further stated that she wasn’t surprised or bothered by the rumors as it was one she had almost always dealt with for most of her life.

Brittney Grinder Was Born In Texas

Brittney Grinner was born Brittney Yvette Griner on October 18, 1990, under the zodiac sign of Libra. Brittney belongs to the African-American ethnic group and holds the status of an American citizen because of her birth in Houston, Texas, United States of America.

She is one of four children born to Raymond and Sandra Griner. Her father, Raymond, is a veteran of the US-Vietnam war and served in the US Marine corps from 1968 to 1969. He is also a retired Sheriff of Harris County. On the other hand, besides her name, there is virtually no information about Britney’s mother, Sandra.

Regarding her siblings, she grew up with three older siblings, namely Shkera, Pier, and Decarlo. However, the information about them on the internet is solely restricted to their names and the fact that they are Brittney’s siblings.

What Was Brittney Griner As A Kid?

Brittney Grinner’s childhood was a relatively normal one. She enjoyed time with her family, and she especially remembers the times she spent sewing with her mother. There are no details of her early formal education days, making it safe to assume that those years passed without much incident.

Things would, however, become quite different when she got to high school. Griner was a student of Nimitz High School in Houston, Texas, and during her years at the high school, the WNBA star revealed that her body began to change. She was soon noticeably taller than girls her age; to make things worse, she was stronger. We all know how brutal high school kids can be, and Brittney was subjected to that high school brutality because of her difference.

Brittney also recounts that her parents, especially her father, were not thrilled when she came out of the closet as a lesbian while still in high school. The friction that announcement caused between father and daughter was why Brittney had to live with an assistant coach for around six weeks until tensions cooled off. Brittney’s statements suggest that her father is still not okay with her sexual preferences.

After pledging to go to Baylor University on a basketball scholarship, Brittney Griner made it clear to Kim Mulkey, her head coach at the time, that she was not prepared to hide her sexual identity, to which the coach replied that she could care less if Brittney was gay and that the only thing she cared about was that she brought her A-game anytime she stepped on the court.

It was an answer that should have pacified Brittney, but she saw it as one that people who were uncomfortable with having that conversation would give. She was right, as the coach later told her to keep her sexual preference to herself for fear that other parents would stop their children from committing to the school if they found out that the school was lenient towards LGBTQ students.

Griner has fought through the barrier of discrimination and is doing her best to reduce the effect of such challenges on the next generation of athletes in the United States of America.

Brittney Griner’s First Marriage Lasted For About A Year

Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson got married on May 8, 2015, to the surprise of many who had borne witness to the topsy-turvy nature of their relationship. Both women are WNBA stars, and it is assumed that they met in those circles. They became engaged on August 14, 2014.

Less than a year later, they were both arrested on charges of assault and disorderly conduct after both sustained injuries during a fight that had broken out between them at their home in Phoenix, Arizona. A week after their wedding, more domestic violence led to both women being suspended by the WNBA, and Griner was ordered to undergo 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling.

A month later, the couple announced that Glory was expecting twin babies conceived through IVF with Glory’s eggs. The babies were born prematurely on October 12, 2015, and Griner was ordered to pay child support after her initial attempt to have the marriage annulled had failed.

Nonetheless, it was clear to almost everyone who was paying attention to the drama in the Griner-Johnson household that the marriage was headed for the rocks, and they were not wrong. Griner and Johnson’s divorce was finalized in June 2016, just over a year into the marriage.
