It was a moment of happiness and all-smiles on Thursday as former Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel and renowned author and News24 columnist Max du Preez were awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Free State.
Manuel, was seen flanked by his beautiful wife Maria Ramos during the colourful event. He received his doctorate in Economic and Management Sciences.

The former minister expressed happiness for receiving the honour, stating that his doctorate comes with challenges and responsibilities.
“This is a great university and I think it has a great vice-chancellor and chancellor and in that context it is humbling. It places an obligation on us to continue the spirit of service.
It is not just a doctorate but it is the spirit in which it is given,” he said.
Prominent author and News24 columnist Max du Preez , who received his doctorate in Humanities said the honour from the university gave him hope for the future.
“It is the university of my home province… the sense of transformation and the spirit of optimism that I have experienced today [Thursday] makes me believe in our country again. I am [more] hopeful today than I was,” Du Preez said.
The university also honoured Antony Osler and Marguerite van der Merwe with chancellor’s medals at the ceremony.
On Wednesday, the University of Free State announced that the process of appointing a new vice-chancellor and rector at the University of Free State has started.
The institution’s spokesperson Lacea Loader said the university council is looking for a suitable candidate to replace Prof Jonathan Jansen, who would step down at the end of August.
However, an earlier report had it that if the position is not filled by the end of August, Prof Nicky Morgan, current vice-rector: operations at the UFS, would act as vice-chancellor and rector until the position is filled.
