Another University of Cape Town Student living off campus has been confirmed raped. The university said that the victim was running along the bicycle path in Newlands when a man attacked her.
This would make it the forth time that students have been reported rapped. The University management stated on Thursday that they received information though not yet certain about a student who was brutally attacked, assaulted and raped off campus on Tuesday evening.
The university spokesperson Gerda Kruger said the attack was similar to the previous attacks that occurred near Rhodes Memorial and that the assailant might be the same person involved in these other cases.
“The 28-year-old woman was said to have been held captive by the attacker for several hours in Newlands forest before she was finally raped after which she was forced to walk down to garage where she was able to break free from the attacker and was assisted by staff to call the (police) for help.
“She has been admitted in hospital. and the university management pledge to help arrest the culprit. “UCT is assisting the student in a variety of ways and will continue to do so,” Kruger said.
The University students and staff were last month warned to keep off from areas around Rhodes Memorial due to a series of attacks. The management pointed out that the area be avoided especially at night. UCT communication and marketing executive director Gerda Kruger said in a statement on the UCT official website;
It is with outrage and regret that we inform University of Cape Town staff and particularly students of incidents of a most serious criminal nature that have recently occurred off campus in the vicinity of Rhodes Memorial.
We urge all to avoid the area, particularly after dark.
Though the police said it was still too early to link the incident to other similar cases in the area in recent weeks, Cape town residents especially the staffs and student are concerned about the recent rise of rape cases in the vicinity saying that they are yet to hear something being done to combat it.
However, SAPS, on February 25, released an identity of a suspect. A warrant of arrest on charges of rape and robbery has been issued on 44 years Patrick Hlomane who is also known as Mthunzi Makhamba.
SAPs still urge the public who have any information on the suspect to call on Captain Ruan Brummer on 074 861 6691 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
