Three People Wounded In Mall Of Africa Shooting


Three people have been shot and wounded in an apparent taxi dispute at the newly opened Mall of Africa’s parking lot in Midrand.

BuzzSouthAfrica gathered that the shootout was carried out by taxi operators outside the shopping center.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed this incident and disclosed that the victims include one bystander and two people believed to be taxi bosses.

The two taxi bosses immediately received treatment on the scene while the critically injured bystander was airlifted by a helicopter to a Johannesburg hospital.

An eyewitness said, “I saw a lot of people running before I could get wind of what was happening… I saw people shooting.”

Another, related that the shootout was between rival associations. “It’s between Ivory Park Taxi Association and the Alexandra Taxi Association. The problem starts with the registration of the routes,” he said.

Following the sad incident, Provincial police spokesperson Captain Tshepiso Mofokeng stated that the police are currently investigating the shooting incident and that four suspects have been arrested.

In another similar incident, two local men were arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a 6-year-old girl. The girl who goes by the name Sadiqah Lippert, was shot in the stomach after stepping out of a house on 9th Avenue on Monday night.

Lippert was found by her grandmother lying outside with a bullet wound in their home in Bokmakierie, Athlone.

Athlone Community Police Forum chairperson Aziza Kannemeyer confirmed on Wednesday that the duo were arrested shortly before Lippert’s funeral on Tuesday afternoon.

The newly opened Mall of Africa is a shopping mall located in Midrand, Gauteng. It is the second largest single phase shopping mall to be built in Africa with a total retail area of 131 000 square metres, and a gross area of 550 000 square metres.
