Prudence Sebalo, popularly known by her stage name, Miss Pru Dj, is an award-winning DJ, songwriter, and producer. Her stage name is coined from her name “Prudence.”

Born on the 16th of April, 1985 (now aged 36), in Vaal Triangle, South Africa, to Mr. and Mrs. Sebalo, Miss Pru Dj had a humble beginning. She spent her early years in the Gauteng area of South Africa. It’s believed she completed her elementary and secondary education in Gauteng but not much is known about her educational background or family members. However, she has in the past posted a video on her Instagram which showed an elderly woman and a young girl dancing. In the caption that accompanied the video, she referred to the elderly woman as mommy and wished her a happy mother’s day.

The hardworking songstress developed a love for music at a young age. Her early exposure to South African pop music culture also sparked an interest in the entertainment industry. Miss Pru Dj believed she could dance. Hence, she joined a dance group but was later kicked out. As a music enthusiast, the turntables caught her interest, and that’s how her disc jockeying (DJ) journey began in 2009. Her love for music and knowledge saw her attend The South African Musical Conference for two years. There, she learned the ropes of DJing and the business side of it. Armed with this knowledge and trainings, she kick-started her radio career by co-hosting her first radio show with DJ Zinhle called House of She. The ambitious DJ has also hosted other radio shows such as The Sound Evolution at Rhythm100 radio and the Cliff Central show Rookies and Rockstars. Miss Pru Dj was equally a radio presenter at TouchHD. She co-hosted a show alongside DJ Slique every Saturday from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Miss Pru Dj Became Famous Through Her Hit Songs: Ameni and Phumelela

The self-taught DJ maximizes every opportunity she gets to hone and harness her DJ’ing skills. She gave sterling performances at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Southern African Music Conference, and Dance Ritual featuring Louise Vega and Josh Milan. The on-air personality has also performed internationally alongside other top DJs. She’s traveled to perform in Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, United States, and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, her passion for music saw her mentoring 50 girls on disc jockeying using Vinyl’s.

In 2015, she got signed to Ambitiouz Entertainment, and since then, she’s been releasing critically acclaimed songs. Miss Pru Dj was aged 30 when she rose to prominence. Her first single, Welele didn’t gain much traction as expected. The following year, her hip-hop anthem Ameni, featuring Sjava, Emtee, Saudi, Fifi Cooper, A-Reece, and B3nchmarq topped charts and garnered over 4 million views on YouTube. Riding on success wheels, Miss Pru Dj went ahead to release another single, “Phumelela” featuring Emtee, Saudi, Sjava, Amanda Black, and La Sauce in 2017. The song received positive reviews, hitting 2 million views on the video-sharing platform, YouTube. The hip-hop artist was once an MC before delving into vocal house music influenced by Vinny da Vinci.

Awards and More Songs Followed The Success Of Her Two Hits

The talented DJ clinched 2 awards at the South African Hip Hop Awards (SAHHA) for her hit single “Ameni.” The hit song was named the Best Collaboration and the Best Music Video of the year. It also bagged awards for the Best Collaboration and Best Music Video at the Metro FM Music Awards and the 23rd Annual South African Music Awards (SAMA). This earned her the title of the first female DJ to win a SAMA.

That same night, she performed her hit single Phumelela, which addresses national issues, especially sexual abuse against women. Following the awards and recognition, she created visuals for her street anthem, uGesi, in which she sang alongside Emtee, Sjava, Saudi, Kid Tini, and Neo. Consequently, she released another single, Isaga Lam, featuring La Sauce, Gigi Lamayne, Nadia Nakai, and Londie London.

As the first female hip-hop DJ to win a SAMA, Miss Pru DJ didn’t rest on her oars. She’s often seen topping the music charts. Her hard work and resilience have pushed her to the peak of her career. In 2019, the Welele singer released her first love tune, Sondela, featuring her record label mates, Blaq Diamond, Cici, Lloyiso, LaSauce, and Lisa. The love song embodies happiness, positive vibes, and joy. She released the visuals for Sondela on the 20th of September, 2019.

The following year (in 2020), she collaborated with the record label’s new signee, Malone Vector, and Blaq Diamond on the inspirational song Price to pay. While the hit song was topping the music charts with a million views, the award-winning DJ proceeded to drop another smash hit, uHulumeni, collaborating with many top artists on the 20th of August, 2020. The banger was positively received on media, radio, and TV. uHulumeni became the number 1 trending song on iTunes. Miss Pru Dj celebrated 11 years in the music industry in 2020. She stated in an interview that she prioritizes learning from different people in the musical sphere. The songstress further said she once suffered impostor syndrome. Gripped with fear, she released her first single, which received massive acclaim.

In addition, she has dipped her toes in the entrepreneurial world by starting a shea butter range with her co-partner. From her social media profile, it’s believed that Miss Pru Dj is quite adventurous at heart. Keen about discovering new talents, she started hosting Sunset Fridays, a live streaming jam session that is also a platform for young talents.
