Maria Sharapova is in real trouble as major sponsors have quickly moved to distance themselves from the five-time Grand Slam tennis champion after she admitted to failing a drug test.
Tag Heuer has severed ties with Maria Sharapova while Nike has suspended its relationship with her.
Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer said on Tuesday, that it has cut ties with Maria Sharapova and would not renew the marketing contract it signed with her after the Russian tennis star announced she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open. A company spokesperson was quoted saying;
Maria Sharapova was under contract with TAG Heuer until December 31st, 2015. We had been in talks to extend our collaboration.
In view of the current situation, the Swiss watch brand has suspended negotiations and has decided not to renew the contract with Ms Sharapova.
Maria Sharapova had a contract relationship with TAG Heuer which has lasted for 12 years.
Tag Heur made this announcement hours after popular US sportswear giant Nike made the same move and severed ties with Maria.
Nike said it is “saddened and surprised” by her admission to testing positive for Meldonium, a drug forbidden in the sports world and was suspending its contract with her.
Car company Porsche has also decided to distance itself from Maria after her admission. She was named as its first female ambassador and signed a three-year deal in 2014.
In a statement, the car company said:
We are saddened by the recent news announced by Maria Sharapova. Until further details are released and we can analyse the situation, we have chosen to postpone planned activities.
her contract with Porsche was due to end this year.
Maria Sharapova made the announcement on Monday, that she had tested positive for Meldonium, a drug she has been taking since 2006 based on prescription by family doctor. She also said that the drug was only added to the banned list this year.
