A shocking news revealed by South African Olympic swimming champion Chad le Clos made fans feel nothing but pity for him.
The young champion, known to be very close to his family‚ is trying to come to terms with the news that both parents are battling cancer. His mum Geraldine and dad Bert are suffering from different kinds of cancer.
Chad le Clos made his personal struggle public on Monday.
He disclosed in a statement:
“The Rio Olympics are just a few weeks away but I can confirm that both my parents are fighting cancer.”
“My Mum Geraldine has breast cancer which has returned since her remission in 2010. She has recently undergone a double mastectomy and is now having chemo. My Dad Bert developed prostate cancer and has also undergone an operation in late June.”
Geraldine le Clos also battled the disease in 2010, when Chad‚ 24‚ first made his name. He won medals at the Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympics.
In May, his mother’s breast cancer was reported to have come back but it was not publicly known until now that Bert has become ill himself.
Popularly known for his “unbelievable” outburst when his son beat American favourite Michael Phelps, Bert has cancer like his wife.
As he prepares to win again at Rio, Chad prays that his parents win their battles with cancer too. He also hopes they will be there to cheer him on in Rio.
“It has not been an easy time but I am training hard for Rio. More than anything else I want them to win their battles. I also hope that they will be in Rio.”
The Rio de Janeiro games will commence on August 5.
