In addition to the medal, Le Clos also broke Jean Basson’s African record from 2009. He clocked 1min 45.20sec behind China’s Sun Yang in 1:44.65. Le Clos fended off American Conor Dwyer by three-hundredths of a second.

Le Clos was only overtaken by China’s Yang as he went out hard, as he did in the heats and semifinals without fading.

Meanwhile, If looks could kill, South African swimmer Chad Le Clos could have been a heap of ashes by now. Rival, Michael Phelps was caught on camera giving Le Clos one of those looks that could drill a hole in someone. While Le Clos was busy prepping ahead of 200-meter butterfly semi finals in Rio, Phelps was sitting close by shooting him a death stare.

Le Clos, who beat Phelps by 0.05 seconds in 2012 stopped the most decorated Olympian of all time from swimming up his third gold in a row.

Also, Tuesday night could turn Le Clos into SA’s most decorated Olympic athlete of all time. This will be actualized if he makes the podium again in the 200m butterfly like he did in 2012.

The young champion, known to be very close to his family‚ is still trying to come to terms with the news that both parents are battling cancer. His mum Geraldine and dad Bert are suffering from different kinds of cancer.

“The Rio Olympics are just a few weeks away but I can confirm that both my parents are fighting cancer,” he said in a statement.

However, he did not let this stop him from bringing his A-game to the Olympics. Congrats champ!
