American mogul and supermodel Tyra Banks is hosting the 12th season of popular show America’s Got Talent.
Banks will be taking over the mic from Nick Cannon who has spent eight years on the show. Cannon bid farewell to the show earlier this year after what seemed like a disagreement between him and the organizers.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Cannon explained his decision to leave the show. He revealed that he had been threatened with dismissal by executives following a racial joke he made on his Showtime stand-up special, Stand Up Don’t Shoot.
An excerpt from the post reads;
“I write this from a deeply saddened and dolorous mindset. After days of deliberating over some extremely disappointing news that I was being threatened with termination by Executives because of a comedy special that was only intended to bring communities closer together, I was to be punished for a joke. This has weighed heavy on my spirit. It was brought to my attention by my “team” that NBC believed that I was in breach of contract because I had disparaged their brand. In my defense, I would ask how so? Or is this just another way to silence and control an outspoken voice who often battles the establishment.”
Notwithstanding, NBC said over the last weekend that Emmy-winner, creator of America’s Next Top Model and one-time supermodel Tyra Banks will be taking over the reins from Cannon. Banks will join the competition series alongside returning judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel.
Banks said she looks forward to “connecting with the dreamers” who are competing for a $1m prize.
Following the news that she will be replacing him on the show, Cannon sent Banks a stunning bouquet with a lovely note that reflects his good wishes: “Tyra, congratulations and good luck on AGT! Love, Nick C.”
Subsequently, Banks shared a snapshot of the delivery on Twitter earlier this week, tagging Cannon.
Episodes of the show will be aired live this summer from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
